ReplyDeleteFor me to be persuaded, I agree that passion is really important. If someone isn’t passionate, or interested in what they are talking about, how can you be influenced and persuaded to act a certain way? In addition, two other traits I think are important are confidence and authenticity. These two traits go hand in hand because I feel like in order to be authentic, you need to be confident in yourself. Even though you may have all of your note cards written out word-for-word, you should deviate from those a little bit to include your personality and your own thoughts, especially in a persuasive situation. Being confident in who you are and what you talk about will elevate your authenticity, and make you more appealing to the audience. I thought one thing from the video that was really helpful, is to speak in the future tense. For example, many activists, such as Martin Luther King Jr., speak about how they want life to be in the future, and how changes today can affect tomorrow. This is a technique that a lot of speakers use in order to inspire and persuade. In addition, the video mentioned that it is important to appeal to ethos (credibility), pathos (emotional), and logos (logic) to cover all of your bases and ensure that your point is clear. I also thought that the song for this week was really great! I haven’t heard it before, but I like the classic sound and its a really feel-good song in my opinion. I also thought it was cool that Lady Gaga was singing it with Tony Bennett!
Great Job Hannah!!! You are a true leader tonight!
ReplyDeleteAlyssa Zahralban
ReplyDeleteMorning! I can be persuaded by seeing the speaker was Motivated, Passionate, and Organized. For me those three things are the most important when choosing and presenting a topic, with these I can be open minded to seeing another side of an argument.
Jenna Norizsan
ReplyDeleteFor me to be persuaded on any level, I think it’s extremely important to be passionate, confident, and reciprocal. If one is so passionate about their topic, it immediately grabs the audiences’ attention. They are well prepared and so knowledgeable on their topic that it intrigues you. I also think confidence is important because when you are not confident, it shows. Confidence will lead you through your speech and make an impact on the audience. The third trait I chose was to be reciprocal. When one is trying to persuade you, they will repeat themselves over and over again. They pick one statement throughout their speech that they keep reminding you of and that’s extremely powerful.
The video taught me the three different types of rhetoric. I am also aware now that deliberative rhetoric is the best one for persuasion. It focuses on the future rather than past or present. I also enjoyed your song of the week. I appreciate your enthusiasm and keeping us engaged.

ReplyDeleteGood morning Professor Brady! for me to be persuaded it is important for the speaker to be charismatic, trustworthy and confident. I feel like these are the most important traits in my opinion because if you are charismatic you are passionate and the way you say things is very inspiring. If you have the trust of the person or you see they have credibility then I'd be more likely to be persuaded by that person. Confidence is key,if you are confident people won't have a reason to doubt what your saying is true.
ReplyDeleteFrom the video I found it really interesting when the video said that the use of rhetoric has the power to persuade anyone even if what you are saying isn't necessarily true. What I took away from the video was that if you use ethos, pathos, and logos properly then you are going to be able to persuade anyone you present to or talk to and you will know when those rhetoric are being used on you. I also really enjoyed the song of the week

ReplyDeletePassion is definitely critical for me to be persuaded. If you do not truly care about it, why should I? Knowledge is also a big one. If you want me to donate to the Red Cross, why? Tell me what my donation would do to help. Not being able to answer basic questions would not make me want to 'listen'. I think an interesting way to persuade someone is the use of reverse psychology, especially with children. By telling someone they cannot do something, because they are too small, will make them want to prove you wrong and you got them to do something they normally would not have.
I enjoyed today's song. I have heard it more than once but never saw the actual video. I have also heard Duke Ellington's version. This song is very familiar to me since I have watched a lot of older cartoons and it has been used in many different ones.

ReplyDeleteIf I were to have someone to persuade me on a topic three character traits the speaker would have to have are the have to be logical and reasonable. While being charming and well spoken are good qualities to have as a speaker i would also want the content of the speakers words to persuade. I would also want the speaker to be passionate about what they are speaking about. The final trait i would want a speaker to have is they must be confident. A speaker must be confident in why they are saying because if they don't sound like they believe what they are saying why should I.
I enjoyed todays song. I have never herd it before but i can appreciate any good music.
For a speaker to persuade me they would have to have a lot of jokes, well educated on the subject, and have to grab my attention early on in the speech. If I'm listening to someone speak for a long time I tend to doze off after a couple of minutes of not being interested. So for me I need to be captivated early on in a speech.
ReplyDeleteErin Conway
ReplyDeleteFor someone to persuade me they would have to have to be enthusiastic and knowledgable without being "dry". If a speaker is enthusiastic it makes it better to listen to them , if you ask questions you want them to give knowledgeable answers, and most of all if someone starts speaking and they are dry I would almost immediately loose interest.
The video showed me the different kinds of rhetoric and how they are used.
Erin! Great Job! Enthusiasm is key! BRAVA!
DeleteTo be pursuaded a speaker needs Humor, charm, and knowledge of the topic.
ReplyDeleteTRUE BRAD!!! And why do you believe that to be true?
DeleteWhat did you think of the dynamic DUO?
Chris Drury
ReplyDeleteFor a speaker to be persuasive they need to know what they are talking about in order to prove that their point logicaly makes sense. They also need to be captivating because it doesn't matter how many facts that they might have, if they can't keep an audiences attention then their facts and stats mean nothing. Lastly the speaker needs to be confident in what they are saying, if not the audience can tell and wont be as susceptible to their charm of persuasion.
Johnny Citarella
ReplyDeleteHope everyone is doing well and staying safe
For someone to persuade me they would need to have a great tone, need to be passionate about what they are talking about, and also be positive. All of these traits in my opinon make a great speaker and get the audiences attention really making them listen and leave thinking about your speech.
For me to be persuaded by a speaker, he/she need to be passionate, humorous, and knowledgeable. When a speaker is passionate about a topic, they will most likely have the confidence, interest and understanding of the subject because they want to know everything about it. A speaker that can implement humor into their speech is captivating, because I personally will be more attentive as an audience member when the author can deliver the message while being humorous. Finally, knowledge is always key. A knowledgeable speaker have the data and knows how he/she organize and deliver efficiently to the audience.
ReplyDeleteGreat Job Izzy! Did you love the song!?

ReplyDeleteWhat are YOUR THREE? My 3 would be enthusiastic, passionate, and great-story telling.
What did you get from the Video? I learned about the different types of rhetoric applied in a speech, considering the intended purpose.

GREAT STORY TELLING!!!! BRAVO! I am thrilled YOU loved the song Abrar! Doo wop.. do wop, doo wop!

ReplyDeleteI think it is most important for persuasive speakers to be captivating, knowledgeable, and entertaining. Without these qualities, I'd be uninterested in what the speaker has to say and would noy be persuaded, just stubborn and annoyed. The video was good for us young speakers to learn rhetoric. I appreciated the breakdown of examples. Finally, your song was good, though not my genre.
Glad you can appreciate it Sammy! I agree.... Entertainment is NUMERO UNO!
DeleteAlexis Larsen
ReplyDeleteI find that I am most persuaded when the speaker sounds knowledgable. If they know what they are talking about that the facts will guide you to see their point of view. I also think it's important for the speaker to be passionate. It's hard to feel persuaded when you can't even convince yourself to listen to them! Finally, I think I am persuaded when a speaker uses strategic visuals. Visuals provide examples and back up what they are saying. I am a very visual learner so I find that to be very useful in a speech.
Visuals ARE KEY!!!!!! BRAVA!!

ReplyDeleteHey Professor Brady,
To be persuaded in any kind of way a speaker must present a well-thought plan, facts, and Passion. Without these three I don’t feel you have a strong argument in your favor. Having a well thought out plan is something that needs to be presented in an understanding way to the viewers. Facts are what back up your ideas and they help seal the deal. Passion is what brings everything together, without passion there will be no course of action.
Passion is the quintessence of Life Will! Great Job
DeleteDOO WOP DOO WOP!!!! GAG AND BENNET? DID YOU ENJOY THEM>!
I am not easily swayed by any peripheral route to persuasion. Logic and reason are the first and foremost qualities in an argument that will convince me of anything. Also, if the person talking has lived and breathed the argument they are making (such as with Sojourner), they will empower the argument so much more.
ReplyDeleteI especially learned that last part of the paragraph from this particular video; giving an argument that is perfectly relevant to one's life makes said argument extremely effective.
I loved the music video; it gives off a nice antique jazz feeling.
BRAVO PEDRO!!! This response is magnificent!! WELL SAID.... Anyone who has lived through an experience and can communicate effectively has my vote!
DeleteGAGA and BENNETT ARE A TRUE FAVORITE!!!
Wissam Alkhatib
ReplyDeleteIn order to persuade me the speaker needs to be knowledgeable, comical and ardent. Without these three traits I wouldn't really be convinced. You need to know what you're talking about and back it up with facts and establish credibility. I feel that if you have a sense of humor, it lets me know you're easy to talk to and are approachable. Lastly you need to be ardent because I want to see that you care about what you are persuading.
Very Creative Wissam!

ReplyDeleteTo be persuaded by a speech I think it's important for the speaker to have confidence, knowledge, and charisma. With all these qualities it will make their listeners more engaged and eager to listen to their speech.
Great Job Searlait!
ReplyDeleteHi Professor Brady!
ReplyDeleteIt was great seeing you, I hope you had a great holiday with your family and that you are all safe and healthy. In order to be persuaded, for me it is important for the speaker to be passionate, knowledgeable, and has the ability to connect with their audience. The TED Ed video on rhetoric was really interesting. I feel that I learned a lot more about ethos, pathos, and logos by watching it. I also enjoyed the song you posted and I like how it goes along with this topic. Looking forward to our Zoom class on Thursday!

ReplyDeleteFor me to be persuaded the individual has to know what they are talking about. That means having facts and figures to back up what they are saying. The second thing and probably the most important is confidence. If you don’t have confidence in yourself then how am I going to believe what you are saying. Lastly the speaker has to be able to translate what they are thinking into something that everyone can understand. When you speak to a group of people you have no idea, we they do and don’t know about your topic. For instance, if you are taking about computers one person may be a coding genius that can hack the FBI while another person may not know how to turn one on. The video showed me that there are multiple ways to persuade people. I also noticed that well there are three different types we end up merging them during speeches weather we intend to or not. It also reminded me about ethos, pathos and logos. Lastly, I thought the song was ok, but I’m not much of a jazz person.
ReplyDeletePersuading someone to believe or do something you believe in is not exactly the easiest thing to do. Personally, to feel persuaded, the speaker has to be knowledgeable, passionate, and motivated about the topic they are speaking about. If I notice the speaker does not have an interest in what they are talking about, I am not going to be compelled with the points they are making. How can someone be persuaded by a topic that is being presented to them if the speaker itself is not passionate about it? Being knowledgeable is crucial when it comes to persuading others. If it appears you do not know what you are talking about, there is no establishing credibility, which ultimately proves to everyone that they most likely should not be listening to you. Motivation is key when it comes to reaching your audience because if the speaker I am listening to portrays a motivated persona, I am instantly drawn to the speech. Typically whenever anyone is motivated, a certain confidence stands out. If someone has the motivation and the confidence to move their listeners while they are speaking, then they will most likely have me wanting to hear more.
ReplyDeleteFor me to be persuaded by a speaker, they have to have three important qualities including have a great sense of humor, confidence and knowledge of the topic. With these three qualities, I would be interested in what the speaker is talking about and retain more.
