The Great Dictator
Charlie Chaplin “The Great Dictator” is a satire that makes fun of the fascist movements of the 40’s and most importantly the Nazis. Released in the 1940 it was one of the few pieces of media that was willing to directly insult the fascist movements taking control of the old world. Yet, out of all the moments in the movie, the last speech of the film secured Chaplin as one of the best orator in history. Chaplin Speech focuses stoking up the fire of humanity that was slowly disappearing as the 1940 roles on.
Out of everything Chaplin is known for, it is humorous that the man known for being the star of silent films is a magnificent orator. His delivery of the speech is extremely well prepared. He makes sure to imitate Hitler speeches by starting calm and quiet, and slowly start to evolve it into a loud and feverous speech that stirs up the audience emotions. Additionally, his timing is good as he keeps a pace that keeps the speech flowing in a matter that avoids it becoming mundane or rushed. His speech is impactful with his most impactful part in my opinion being “Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate, only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural” (The Great Dictator 1:58). The impacts of these words leave the audience with a sense of responsibility, to defeat and stay away from those without humanity, those who create the darkness in the world through their hatred and mechanical thoughts. It is a statement that was true that and is true today, which is why it is still so influential.
Overall, I would rate the speech a nine out of ten. It manages to stay as relevant today than it was in its pass. It also successfully imitates and rebukes the speeches it is based on. It leaves it listeners with a feeling of responsibility that if good people strive to make a difference and defeat evil we will.

In Remember the Titians, Denzel Washington (as high school football coach Herman Boone) makes a speech about teamwork and respect-specifically, the Battle of Gettysburg, where 50,000 men died while fighting in the eponymous field, and the fight is still on today. Denzel says, “If we don’t come together on this hollow ground, we too will be destroyed…just like they were. I don’t care if you like each other or not, but you will respect each other.” People need to work together and respect each other to achieve their goals. As a speech professor, I would rate this speech an 8 because although Denzel’s delivery was enough to make me moved, he didn’t sound extemporaneous enough. However, he did have good timing, pausing for a short time between each sentence to show emotion for all of us

In the movie “Saving Private Ryan”, captain John H. Miller, played by Tom Hanks delivers a powerful speech, describing the life he lived prior to the mission he is on. He sees the men he is on this mission with grow restless but explains if saving private Ryan gives him a chance to see his wife again then he’ll do it. This speech is about rallying the troops he is with to stick to the process for their long term goals of returning home. Miller states “every man i've killed the farther away from home i feel”. This is powerful as in an attempt to bring the group together he explains he feels horrible about the men he’s killed but the end goal of seeing his wife again in a way evens it out. It also gives the audience a clue as to what soldiers go through mentally when they are away on a mission.
If I were a speech professor, I would give this speech an 8/10. Miller starts his speech off with a simple question which is “What’s the pool on me up to right now?”. Miller then relates to the audience which in this case is his troops in trying to sympathize with them that the situation there is not ideal at all. He uses effective pauses with great timing throughout his speech and explains his past life as a teacher. Miller then explains he doesn't know who Ryan is but is willing to do whatever it takes to save him so that he can see his wife again. This relates to his troops as i'm sure they would love to get back to their families and their normal lives. He explains how he ponders if his wife will notice him after the mission as he feels he has changed. Overall, Miller impacts the troops' hearts, captivating them in his story explaining his life and his future goal which ultimately brings them together to save private Ryan.

In the film “Any Given Sunday”, coach Tony D’Amato gives a powerful speech to his players for one the most important games of the season and some of their careers. The whole team has their heads down like they accepted defeat, but the speech he gives starts to change that and give them motivation to go fight and give it all they have. During the speech D’Amato says “life is a game of inches”. This makes a big impact on group and starts to bring their focus back. He relates it to the game of football and in aspects of life that’s why it's very impactful.
If I were a professor, I would give this speech a 8/10. The speech is started by just saying this is one of the most important games. As the speech builds up so does the emotional level. He starts to relate to his own personal life and help relate to the players lives. He does a good job of timing out what he’s gonna say and when he’s gonna say it. He also captives the audience every well, by make it relatable to everyone and say things that make take a second to think about it. Lastly he got the impacted the group enough to get them all on board with what he was saying. Got them all to join together for the common goal that they all have.

“The Shawshank Redemption”
One of my favorite movies of all time is “The Shawshank Redemption”, a film based on the short novel written by Stephen King. What makes this film one of my favorites, is due to one of the speeches towards the end of the film. Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Red (Morgan Freeman) share this speech talking about what kind of life to have outside the prison walls. Andy wants to escape Shawshank to fulfill his dream and wants to get Red to come along with him once he gets out of Shawshank. Andy needs a partner, and a friend, to carry out his vision for a better life. However, being at Shawshank for a long period of time, Red doubts he will ever make it outside the walls. Red has become “institutionalized” as they put it, being locked away for many years.
The final quote to the speech, however, changes Red’s mind at the end, “I guess it comes down to a simple choice really: Get busy living, or get busy dying.” This quote touches Red since Andy is describing the fact that staying in prison is not living, it’s dying. Shawshank takes your life away when you stay too long; that’s what Red meant by “institutionalized”. The quote also makes the audience think too, trying to determine whether or not they are living their lives to the fullest. You question your life choices and how you want to spend your life, and who you want to spend the rest of your life with.
I would honestly give the speech a nine out of ten rating. A big chunk of that result is that both Andy Dufresne and Red had one quality that made the speech stand out: they are both relatable. Andy wants to achieve something in an effort to change his life and Red has his own doubts that he will ever find hope in anything ever. Both characters exist in the real world today, and it’s our job to help those who doubt themselves. There wasn’t much body language, or dynamic tone to make it an exciting speech. However, the vocabulary used, as well as the right amount of pauses to give the audience (and Red) a chance to think and take in the words.
One thing to take away from this interaction would be to keep a sense of hope and optimism. At another point in the film, Andy was locked in the “hole” for a week for playing a record over the P.A. Andy kept hope alive in an effort to remain sane, however, Red has his doubts. He claimed that hope is a dangerous thing, and if you are not careful, you will lose yourself. Andy defied against Red however, which led to his escape. As well as Red finding the hope he needed to see Andy again and spend the rest of their lives together. Keeping hope alive, will prevent those from relying on their doubts, like Red, and being optimistic for the future is the fuel needed to get their hopes.

Miracle
Some may refer to "Miracle” as the greatest sports film, but I consider it the best. The movie is about the journey of the 1980 US Men's Olympic Hockey Team and their road to gold. One of the more infamous pre-game speeches was delivered before their matchup with hockey powerhouse U.S.S.R, known for being the best hockey team in the world. Herb Brooks, head coach of Team USA, faces the daunting task of assembling a team able to defeat the Soviets. This speech will forever change how hockey is viewed in the United States and worldwide, as the Americans will pull off, still to this date, the greatest upset in sporting history.
It’s February 22, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York where 22 men, fresh out of college are playing on the biggest stage in the world for the best country in the world. Going against 22 fully grown Soviets who have been playing together longer for decades. The locker room, full of tension and nerves, is dead silent when coach Herb Brooks walks in to fire up his team. Taking command of the room he utters the phrase “Great moments are born from great opportunity,” emphasizing that this isn’t any ordinary game, but most likely the most important moment of their lives. Brooks is saying how this game is a game every team dreams of, being the underdogs and the team that dethrones the king. “Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can!” This is one line where it may seem obvious, but he outlines how they are going to win, and how they will become heroes. “This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw ‘em.” This is not only referring to the hockey game, but also the current developments with the Cold War. Americans at the time feared the U.S.S.R, but Coach Brooks wasn’t. He let his players know it's their time to be the best team in the world. He ended his speech with “This is your time. Now go out there and take it!” This is America's time to win and Herb Brooks knew that.
I would rate this speech a 10/10 the ability of coach Herb Brooks to captivate his team and to really fire them up. His delivery was crucial to the whole speech, he knew they would be nervous before the game when he walked in, so he knew they needed reassurance that they are the best in the world and there is a reason they are playing in such an important game.
Herb Brooks is so emotional throughout his coaching tenure with team USA because just 20 years prior he was cut from the team and was forced to watch the team win gold from home. He knew deep down that this was his chance to claim gold, but this time as a coach. Throughout the speech and film, we see how much the players sacrificed to play for Coach Brooks and how we were able to turn lowly college kids into the greatest hockey team ever assembled. Although that wasn’t the gold medal game, they won on to defeat Finland and ultimately take down the Soviets and defeat Finland for the 1980 Gold Medal.

Gordon Bombay played by Emilio Estevez in the film “The Mighty Ducks”, delivers one of the greatest speeches in movie history. He provides a team of young hockey players with a powerful speech during intermission as they are three points behind. The speech reaches the audience on an emotional level. He describes the importance of keeping your pride and being true to yourself. He uplifts the players and provides them with a sense of confidence and self-respect. His speech was very impactful, especially when he says, “No matter what people say or do, we have to be ourselves”. The players take his words into great account because he makes them realize in order to be successful they must be themselves while out in the ring rather than pretending to be someone they are not. After he says this, he follows by asking each individual person to state their name and where they are from. Here Bombay exaggerates the idea that there is only one version of yourself out there, so they must all come together as a team.
If I were a speaking professor such as Professor Brady, I’d give this speech a solid 8 out of 10. Bombay is an extemporaneous speaker who spoke confidently, fluidly, and his character seemed very calm and likeable. He was emotional and spoke from his heart. His speech was short yet powerful and concise. He was able to captivate the audience by involving them. He went around in a circle and allowed everyone to speak so that they could all relate to his message. Overall, this speech was impactful and powerful. Bombay leaves the audience with a strong message that we can all incorporate in our lives. He leaves the audience with confidence and ultimately encourages everyone to stay true to yourself and come together to be successful.

ReplyDeleteThere are many inspiring movies that catch the audience’s eyes on motivation and one of them is ‘Friday Night Lights’. Gary Gaines in ‘Friday Night Lights’ is a football coach to his players and he turns football into a metaphor about life. He talks to them in half time in the winning game about how important it is to have relationships with your family and to not make winning all about priority. There is more things in life than just winning a football game. This quote caught my eye and it said, “Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family, and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you told them the truth. And that truth is you did everything you could.” If that doesn’t inspire a team, what will?” (Gaines). This stood out me to the most because it made me realized that winning games are not the main thing that is important, but rather your relationships with your teammates, coaches, friends, or family, etc….. If I was a professor who heard this speech, I would give him a ten because it was very emotional and motivating that he connected with the audience. The way he related a sport to their lives through relationships is what is important. Gaines used eye contact, he related to the audience well his players and really got them emotional and that is what makes it a great speech. He captured their hearts and he also did it to the people like me watching.

Have you ever seen something so powerful, so inspiring on Tv to the point where it seemed as if they were talking to you? There have been many times, when the actor is speaking, I feel as if they are talking to me. As if they are trying to motivate me. As many of us may know him as Sylvester Stallone, I grew up believing that his name was really Rocky. When the Rocky series first came out, my family would watch them over and over again to the point where my brothers would have even memorized some of the lines. I don't blame them though, those movies are amazing however, there was one part that had really stood out to me when I was a kid. It was when Rocky talked to his son about the real world. In the movie, Stallone says “You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life.. But it ain't about how hard ya hit ..How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!” This quote is powerful. It makes the audience feel motivated, feel important. This speech was extemporaneous for a movie but not necessarily the best for outside the studio. It was good in the sense that Rocky was speaking to his son, he was inspiring his son and inspired the audience as well. His delivery was strong, he was looking at his son as he acted in the movie and held eye contact.

The speech that I chose was by Gary Gaines and Billy Bob from the film “Friday Night Lights,” in this scene Gaines seems as if he is giving the boys a pep talk. There have been many scenarios such as this, especially in high school sports, where it seems like a team is losing and that confidence that they had in the beginning of the game is disintegrating. However, Gaines is able to create a concept of being perfect, not through the opinions of others, but by helping one another. This creates the thesis that being perfect is not about your life achievements. Being perfect is about creating and protecting trustworthy relationships between each other. A quote from the speech that supports this is, “To me, being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It’s about you and your relationship to yourself and your family and your friends.” This quote has an impact on the audience in the film, because the players realize that being perfect is not defined by a number, especially the number on the scoreboard. Being perfect is defined by making yourself proud and the ones around you as well. This quote also impacted the audience watching, because we, in our lives, always define being perfect by a number as well. Whether it be about grades, weight, money, we strive to reach the ideal number yet being yourself is the best and only form of perfect. If I were a speech professor my criteria would be an eye opening beginning line and a constant hook throughout the speech. This speech from the film “Friday Night Lights” would get a nine because it does have an eye opening first line. The line being, “Well it's real simple you got two more quarters and that’s it.” This is such an eye opener because it strikes the reality of the situation to the audience. Then Gaines proceeds to speak about this concept of perfection and that’s what keeps the hook through the speech. The only area where the speech lacks is the end, because it seems to dull down a bit. However, the adrenaline is regained when everyone proceeds to chant. These types of speeches are what keeps individuals grounded and confident in difficult situations and tasks.

The speech I chose was by Coach Gary Gaines from the show "Friday Night Lights". Coach Gaines is giving his players a speech, he isn't yelling at them or telling them to play better, he is giving them a speech that they will hold with themselves for a lifetime. While this speech is to hype them up for a football game, it does more than that, it holds a bigger purpose. When he starts the speech, you can see the emotion, love and passion in his eyes, you can tell he is about to have a very impactful speech. Gaines talks about being perfect and what the definition of being perfect is, how it isn't superficial things, but it is your integrity and the relationships you hold. He is showing the players that being truthful and giving your all is much better than a score on a scoreboard. This brings the players to the realization that this is there "forever" for many of them it was the last game that they would ever play of that sport and that the bonds they have made with each other is more important than a score. This relates to many people especially people who have played sports in high school. For many people they have played a game their whole life and create relationships, Gaines proves that at the end of the day, the last game you will ever play you aren't thinking about the score but about your relationships. Gaines speaks from the heart and you can tell how much emotion he puts into his speech and how much love he has for his players. When you get into your speech and show vulnerability your audience will show compassion and feel the emotions with you. That is what makes a great speaker great, they bring out their emotions to form a connection with their audience and it gets the audience into the speech and makes them think of things in a different way. While Gaines could have had a better more powerful ending, he had an amazing speech that kept everyone paying attention since it was from the heart. Never at any point was it boring or hard to listen to, I personally felt engaged the whole time and didn’t even realize it was 3 minutes. At the end you see the love in everyone’s eyes, they are ready to go back out and play the sport they love for the last time. Going out and thinking about the relationships rather than the score is the reason why they will have that chance to win. Gaines showed them love and something to play for.

I chose the speech from the movie “Troy” that was with Brad Pitt playing Achilles a Greek fighter when they are trying to take over the land of Troy. This speech was about working together, taking over power and winning over their enemies in war. They had their best fighter who was Achilles to give the speech and motivate the rest of the soldiers. One powerful quote would be when he said “Take it, it’s yours!” This is very powerful because it set a positive vibe for the soldiers.
If I was a speech professor I would give this speech a 10/10 because it is a very inspirational and positive speech. This is what makes speeches great is that it gives a positive message that brings everyone together before a big event such as a concert, playing a game in sports or more importantly a war. The skills that I learned in class and that was portrayed in this speech was that Achilles engaged the whole crowd of soldiers and had them feeling the same way about winning and taking over. He ended the speech with saying just take it, it’s yours which gives the men a lot of motivation to go out and fight.

Robin Williams as Sean Maguire did an amazing job in his role in Good Will Hunting. In the speech Robin William expresses how you can go through your entire life without ever getting to know somebody, and that nobody is perfect. It is the small “idiosyncrasies,” the small things you know about someone, that makes a relationship perfect.
“You’re not perfect sport and let me save you the suspense. This girl you met; she isn’t perfect either. But the question is whether or not your perfect for each other.” This is the quote that stood out to me the most and should impact everyone in the audience. As human being we long for relationship, either be it romantic or friendship. This point gets across that you are not perfect, and not to hold yourself to this standard, and everyone else you are looking at is not perfect either. But these people together can create strong bonds that you did not know could exist.
On a scale of 1-10, I would easily give this an 8. In the three minutes this lasts, it manages to string together every point in emotion you could ask for. Seriousness, humor, and sorrow. Through all the emotions it covers, you are forced to reflect on how you view relationships, and how you have treated yourself and others. Maybe it is my interest in Robin Williams, because of how he was a character I saw a great deal of in my childhood that makes me see this as near perfect, but I cannot help but to.

Ezekiel 25:17
There have been many times that quotes from the Bible have been referenced throughout Hollywood. One movie does not take lines from the scriptures and twist and confuse their meanings more than Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. One of the movie’s most notable moments is when the character Jules Winnfield, played by Samuel L. Jackson, recites a rendition of the quote Ezekiel 25:17 from the Bible. Although the speech he gives does not accurately represent the true meaning of the quote, his modified version creates a bold dilemma between acts of good and evil.
Jackson’s character begins by saying “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men,” meaning that the people who are truly good people and have good intentions are surrounded by others who are evil and do not care about doing good for others. He then continues to say “blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children.” I believe this means that those that act as a guide for others, who help the weak and lead them through the darkness, are the ones who are blessed and are eternally good. As an audience member, this line stuck out to me because one of the values I try to practice in my every day life is helping those who can not help themselves. It is the idea of acting as a “sheepdog” or “shepherd” that is willing to go out of their way to protect the “sheep” that have trouble protecting themselves is something that I use to help and do good for others.
When he confronts Ringo in the diner, Jackson’s character debates how this quote applies to him: Is Ringo the evil and the gun is the shepherd protecting him, the righteous man? Is Ringo the righteous man and Jackson the shepherd, while the world is evil and selfish? Or is it that Ringo is the weak and Jackson is the tyranny, who is now trying to be the shepherd and let Ringo leave alive? This gets the audience thinking about what it actually means to be good or evil; to find out who is the righteous man, who is the tyranny, and who is the shepherd to protect the weak.
I would rate this speech as a 7/10. I think Jackson did many amazing things as a speaker. He always commands the audience and the other characters when he says this speech while maintaining sharp eye contact, a firm tone, and dynamics as he talks. This makes his speech very captivating and his delivery is superb. Additionally, I think the ideas presented in this speech give the listener something to think about after they hear it and makes them wonder if they are a shepherd that guides the weak through darkness. What I don’t like about this speech is that many of the quotes from the Bible used are references from different parts of the scriptures and have different meanings. Many of these lines are twisted to sound better and to be applied to a vicious killer instead of promoting the works of the Bible. Overall though, I believe this is a speech everyone should listen to and is very impactful.

The Goonies Movie Speech:
There reaches a point in life where we feel like giving up. At this point, motivational speeches from others are necessary to boost our morale to keep moving forward. One such speech is that in the movie “The Goonies.” The speech is from a little asthmatic boy, Sean Astin, who inspires his fellow Goonies to prop up their journey to discover treasure and spare their community. His friends are afraid that they might die in the process, but he assures that they have got a chance, having come from far than even one of the pros. The brave boy persuades them to carry on with their search since aborting it would be consequential.
“Our parents want the best for us, but right now they are gonna do what is right for them coz it’s their time up there. Down here it’s our time, and that is all over the second we ride up troy bucket” (The Goonies 1:01). The quote is preceded by Astin’s warning of how things are about to take a new shape in the community if they give up in searching for the treasure, the only hope for their community. He airs out the statement showing his fellows the roles different people have to play in saving the community. The statement completely changes the viewpoint of the situation in his audience. They become inspired and bravely work towards saving the community.
As speech scholar, I found the speech intriguing and give it a rating of 9/10. One of the criteria used to evaluate the speech is timing. Astin delivers the speech to his audience when they are discouraged from carrying on with their search. He aims at motivating and inspiring them, for they are the hope for the community. Despite being a small boy, his speech portrays him as a great speaker and manages to influence his fellows. He does not forcefully tell them what to do but instead creates insight for them to decide voluntarily. In general, the speech is appropriately delivered in a clear and precise manner, making it easy for the audience to understand the message.

The speech I choose was from the movie “The Mighty Ducks' it was very inspirational. Gordon Bombay was trying to left up the his team because they were down by 3. Bombay had to make his speech relate to his audience which was much younger than he was. He had to find a another way to get though to them on a personal level. At that time while he was giving the speech the kids were at a all time low and wanted to give up on whole game, but Bombay had to install confidences in them to not give up. So Bombay told a story about when he was playing a game and hurt his knee and said he was going to give up but he realized that if he did that he would be giving up who he is as a person too. The quote that impacted the audience was “no matter what people say or do we have to be ourselves” this give the confidences to never give up on and not to change themself for anyone. Bombay put in a lot of emotion into his speech so he was able to reach to them because they were all in emotion, that they thought that we're going to lose the game. I would say that his speech was a ten because his speech did what it was supposed to do he impact the kids on the team to not give up and to give it they're all in the game, even when the odds are against them.

I chose the Rocky Balboa speech to his son as it is very inspirational and motivational. Rocky gave his insight from their lives and explains to his son how life really is. He doesn't just give a lesson to his son but to the audience watching it as well. Even though I have never watched the movie, I really enjoyed listening to the speech because I think it is relatable to life in general.
One of the most important quote he had in the scene was this, “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” What he is trying to explain to his son with this quote is that he shares are no matter the situation, what defines you and makes you keep pushing forward is how you handle it. You need to make things happen for yourself and take responsibility for whatever happens. Also, he wants his son to know that no matter how many times he gets knocked down, to keep on fighting for what he wants.
In conclusion, I would rate this speech an 8 or 9 out of 10. I feel like he really did captivate the audience with his tone of voice and the wording he uses to emphasize his points. I feel like he is such an inspiration not just in the movie but in real life as well and he is just a reminder of his own quote that he used, no matter how many times you get knocked down what defines you is how you handle the situation and keep on pushing through so you can be successful.

Robin Williams' speech in Dead Poets Society was very powerful to me because I can relate to the ideology and points he was making during the speech. When I truly feel passionate about something and speak on it and share my ideas with others, I feel as though I can accomplish anything.
I know when listening to others who are truly passionate and believe in what they are speaking about, I want to listen and understand what they are saying as well. The quote that stuck out to me the most was, "No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world". This quote by Robin Williams was very powerful. He says they don't read and write poetry to be cute; but to change the world through words of passion, love, and expressing things that can't be seen by the naked eye. He tells them that writing or expressing poetry is like putting your heart, life, and soul on the line. This is because when people write poetry, they are pouring their emotions and deepest thoughts onto a piece of paper for people to either crumple up and throw out; or be heard out and listened to by a large body of people. It is a gamble and a very emotionally risky gamble at that. Nobody can see poetry, they read it and feel it. Robin Williams is trying to teach them the power of words, language, and passion.
