ReplyDeleteI picked the speech by Denzel Washington, he began to be funny and honored himself to be there. He relates to the audience by making a few jokes and shows how he is a little nervous, which relates to others as they sit there and listen and laugh. He keeps attention by also relating to the parents who are also in the audience. This event is a graduation which is why a commeriativ suits this speech.
LIfe is worthwhile by taking risks, he makes sure he tells the audience about this because he was once like them. He basically is saying to never give up and keep taking risks no matter what by also falling forward. He wants you to know other people will fail and lose like you, you are not alone. “I didn’t quit, and was praying for the next audition” he tells all after you keep trying and trying to catch a break eventually. Hard work pays off.
“Do you have the guts to fail? And if you don’t fail you aren’t even trying”, this really motivates me and especially will motivate the audience. Even though you don't want to fail and be disappointed, it happens but your time will come to shine. He is clear and passionate about giving everything you have to get what you want. He also uses repetition which makes us really understand what he means. Every chance you take will eventually be rewarding in the end. “Never hold back, fall forward”.

ReplyDeleteI chose to write about the third-grade dropout speech which was an incredible story about a man's life that was changed by his father and three words. He starts the speech off explaining that his father is the wisest man that he knows and that he's a college dropout comparing that to other oxymorons like jumbo shrimp to lighten the mood in the room. He further explains that in college he met the love of his life and even though he thought she was way out of her league she fell for him and they got married 4 years later. They had kids and 6 years after they got married she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She unfortunately passed away soon after and at her funeral, his father said three words that would stand to keep him alive today.
His father said “son, just stand”, and this meant that no matter how hard times can be, keep standing up and never back down from anything even when at rock bottom. The speaker definitely impacted his audience due to his tone of voice that pierced everyone's ears and his humor that made him more relatable to his audience. He also opened the audience's eyes by telling them that wisdom can be found anywhere and especially in failure so don't ever quit looking for it. After listening to this wonderful speech I learned that it is imperative to live my life to the fullest because you never know when it can be taken from you. In addition, I learned that no matter how tough things may get, I always have to keep standing because there is always more to look forward to in life.
I chose to write about the “Third Grade Dropout” speech given at a California State College commencement ceremony by Rick Rigsby. He chose to prepare this speech in the way that he did because it was a college commencement ceremony, so it needed to be tied back to education in some way. He did so by talking about the wisest man he ever met, his father, and how he was a third-grade dropout who never “let school get in the way of his education.” I thought that quote in particular was very powerful, and it resonated with me because there is so much we learn outside of school that shapes us into who we are through life lessons and experiences.
ReplyDeleteThis speech was extemporaneous. It is clear the speaker was very prepared and knowledgeable in terms of being wise. He knew the perfect timing for his jokes and when to switch it to more serious information. I think that his jokes helped to keep the audience captivated because as someone who has sat through a graduation ceremony before, there can be a lot of speeches that feel repetitive and mundane, but the beginning of his was lively and helped to engage the audience. In this speech, the speaker was honoring two people, his father and his late wife. He honored his father to tie it back into education and show how his father’s lessons impacted him as a person and tied into the loss of his wife. He honored his wife to show how the lessons his father taught him got him to this point in his life and show that despite her passing, his father’s lessons stuck with him and help him to keep going on his most difficult days.
This speech definitely impacted me. I thought the language he used was powerful and commanded attention from his audience. The stories he told were important life lessons for him that can resonate with the audience as well. The audience will walk away knowing that their education is not over after college. Education is a life-long process that we acquire through experience and mistakes. For me personally, this speech really impacted me because he honors his wife who passed away from breast cancer in the speech. If we were to do the commemorative speech in class, I would have honored someone who meant a lot to me who unfortunately passed away from breast cancer as well. After this speech, I think what will resonate with me most is the quote I mentioned as most powerful to me in my first paragraph, to never let “school get in the way of education.” School is very important to me, and at the same time I feel it is important to remember we never truly finish learning.

ReplyDeleteI chose the “Third Grade Dropout” speech given by Rick Rigsby because I felt like it was the most powerful speech out of the examples provided. Right off the bat, Rigsby draws you in with his powerful voice and sense of humor, and his words about the wisest person he met being a third-grade dropout. When he says this, he really hooks his audience in, because it makes the audience want to know more, and why he says this. Rigsby speaks of this ‘third-grade dropout’ and says that it was his father, and his father taught himself how to read and write because he was needed on the farm and could not go to school. However, despite the setback of traditional schooling, his father was the smartest and wisest man in the family. Rigsby then says that you often find wisdom in places that you will not traditionally look, and that is absolutely the case when it comes to his father. Rigsby then goes on to say “Ego is the anesthesia that deadens the pain of stupidity. Pride is the burden of a foolish person.” These powerful words emphasize the point that you should be humble, even if you are as wise as his father, or if you are as good as a coach as John Wooden, who has national championships under his belt. You should always strive to be the best, but you do not need to boast and brag about it.
The next part of this speech is beautifully tragic. Rigsby begins telling a personal anecdote, as a way of connecting to the audience more, about his wife. He talks about how beautiful of a person she was, inside and out, and how she was the love of his life. You can see the love he felt for her in his facial expressions as he spoke. But then he tells of the tragic ending of his wife’s life when she is diagnosed with breast cancer. When she died, Rigsby felt like he was going to fall apart, and even talking about her death, you could tell that it still hurt him to this day. But then he talks about the lesson his father taught him, as they were standing over her coffin. He told him, “Just keep standing.” Those words helping Rigsby stay strong, and to keep standing. He was at his rock bottom, but he knew that once you hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up. So, he built up from his bottom, and that led him to where he is now. He advises the audience that failing is the not the worst thing that can happen. Not failing is. If you don’t fail at least once, you don’t value all the successes that you have made. He then wraps up his speech by bringing it all back to the beginning, about the wisest man he has ever known was a third-grade dropout, and you will find wisdom in the most unexpected places.
The line of this speech that really sticks with me is the words from Rigsby’s father, “Good isn’t good enough if you can be better. Better isn’t good enough if you can be best.” It’s this line that is motivation to shoot for the stars and be the best that you possibly can. The delivery of this line is also extremely impactful, and it goes to show how great of a speaker that Rick Rigsby is. He speaks to this audience, who are celebrating a great achievement, and reminding them that they can always do better, and telling them to be humble, and that it’s okay to fail sometimes. It is a powerful message and it is also an important message that he is delivering to the audience.
I chose Rick Rigsby’s commemorative speech about his father, a third grade dropout. This was a speech that forever changed the way I see how to build a speech, but was edited in such a way that ruined the overall impact.
ReplyDeleteRigsby himself has an energetically positive vibe throughout the speech; one that practically forces anyone hearing it to want to listen in. His humor may not land for everybody, but it is clearly delivered extemporaneously.
Rigsby’s goal seems to be to inspire people that no matter who you are, if you can be a beacon of wisdom to your family, you will make a positive impact on many people. In one of the hardest trials Rick had ever gone through, only his faith in God and his father’s wisdom delivered him.
What ruined the speech for me, however, was the music that was obnoxiously edited into the YouTube video. The one short moment when Rigsby mentions his wife’s cancer without any music shows how effective the rest of the speech would have been without music. Alas, whoever edited the speech thought that they could evoke more emotion by forcing in some generic dramatic tunes. I hope there is a version of this speech without the music.
I chose to listen to Steve Jobs' speech that he gave in 2005 at Stanford University. Steve Jobs gained the audience's attention by starting with a story about his adopted parents struggling to get his birth mother to sign the final adoption papers because of their financial status.
ReplyDeleteSteve Jobs is an extemporaneous. It's clear that Steve Jobs was prepared for this speech and knew what he was going to talk about. It's clear to the audience that he practiced many times. He knew exactly when to tell a joke, when to become serious, and how to gain the curiosity of the audience. During his speech, Steve Jobs tells 3 stories. He shares a story about his parents commemorating them and all that they did for him. He admired that they sent him to college even though they couldn't afford it. They battled to adopt him as well. He commemorated his business partner and his wife. He spoke on Apple and shared that being fired from Apple was the best thing that ever happened to him. He tells about his wife and how she helped to guide him into his happy life. Finally, he commemorates his own life and eventual death. He tells his story about nearly facing death. He talks about his story with cancer and how it was a miracle that he is cured.
From this speech, I've learned that Steve Jobs want's the listener to follow their heart and not create any regrets in life. He learned this himself from his own near death experience. He says to live like you have nothing to lose because you don't, death is inevitable. This impacts the audience in such great ways. He is speaking to college graduates who are about to experience the real world. His message to them is to be happy and create the best life that they can, without regret.

Steve Jobs at Stanford University
The speech by Steve Jobs at the University of Stanford was one that stood out for me among the others. The speech is broken down into three separate stories each about his life experiences. His first story is about him growing up, being adopted, and going to college. His second story talks about love and loss. In this part, Steve mentions being fired from apple how he deals with starting over. The final part of his speech talks about death and how it’s his inspiration to go forward each and every day. Steve was giving this speech to inspire the graduating class to go out into the world and do everything they possibly can because although it’s tough to think about, your time can end at any point. He wanted to share his life stories and the things he learned along the way. The fascinating part is how open he was about his illness and how it motivated him to complete his projects even faster and more efficient. Without this determination, the iPhone could have been buried in its early development phases because of research and design costs growing through the development phases.
Steve’s speech was not extemporaneous, it was well thought out and well planned. It felt like each and every word was handpicked and used for a specific reason adding to the overall feel of such a serious and informative speech. I feel he chose these words because he was honoring such an important time in those kids’ lives as they graduated from college and went into the real world.
The speech will certainly leave an impact just based on the topics Steve discussed. While talking about his life early on in college it was amazing to hear about his typography class and how he incorporated what he learned in the mac computer; he even states that class is what ultimately made the Mac Computer such a success. “It was the first computer with perfect typography” he stated. His final part of the speech regarding death is a true eye-opener. I don’t think many of the people there were expecting him to bring up such a topic at such an important happy time. But Steve was able to use death as the driving factor in his work and it clearly showed. He mentions that death is something we all face and there is no escaping it, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do. When he knew his time was coming he basically went into overdrive and pumped out some of the greatest products that are still being refined today.
“Third Grade Dropout” was a speech given by Dr. Rick Rigsby and it was undoubtedly one of the most motivating speeches I have ever listened to. His introduction to his commemorative speech was compelling enough to catch the audience’s attention right away. He began with a simple sentence statement, “the wisest man I ever met in my life, a third grade dropout” (Rigsby). Obviously people have heard of high school and college dropouts, but it is incredibly shocking to hear about someone in elementary school dropping out. Rigsby talked about how his father might have been a dropout, but he never stopped learning. He taught himself to read and write, not stopping himself from getting an education regardless of not being in school. Although Rigsby remained serious from time to time to get his points across, he made sure to throw in jokes every once in awhile. His sense of humor kept the audience attentive throughout the entire speech and earned many laughs.
ReplyDeleteThe speech took a personal turn when Rigsby began talking about his wife. She was “the finest woman [he] ever met in [his] life.” They eventually got married and had a few kids. A few years later, his wife Trina found a lump in her breast which happened to be breast cancer. She fought for six years before unfortunately succumbing to the illness. Although he spent a few minutes talking about his wife and undoubtedly sent the audience into tears with her words (I happened to be one of them), he brings everything back to his father who we know as the “third grade dropout.” His father told him three words, three words that evidently had an effect on him. He told him, “Son, just stand.” This means no matter what goes on in life, always keep standing.
Rigsby honored the milestone being celebrated at the time, which happened to be a graduation ceremony. He provided many quotes that can ultimately impact a college graduate as they prepare to face life’s challenges as an adult. His goal was to motivate the graduates and tell everyone stories that motivated him whilst growing up. The language spoken by Rigsby was academic and knowledgeable. He appeared extemporaneous to his audience and that helped make it a fantastic speech. After listening to the speech, I now have many quotes to keep in mind. I genuinely enjoyed this speech and it is not going to be something I will forget.

Jim Valvano’s Speech
In 1993 Jim Valvano was awarded the Ashe Courage and Humanitarian award. Valvano begins his speech by explaining how he has cancer and how people always ask him how he is dealing with it. He explains that nothing has changed because he is already an “emotional passionate man”. He says that there are 3 things that we should do right away- to laugh, to think and to have your emotions move you to tears (happy or sad). If you do these things you will live a happy complete life. Right away he catches the audience by making the strong emotional connection. Doing these things every day, that is a “full” day. When we have immitted time we have to make sure every day is a full day. He uses an anecdote and tell the story of the first time he had to make a speech as a college coach. This added a little bit of comedy and laughter to the speech though it was serious.
This speech stood out to me because yet is was a heavy topic, he made it happy and motivational. He had cancer and he knew he had limited time to he told everyone to make sure we live out everyday we are given, because our days given are limited.

Steve Jobs
I feel as though Steve Jobs’ commemorative speech given at Stanford University captivated me the most, especially as a college student myself. Steve Jobs gave a speech to a graduating class hoping to inspire them. He did this by telling three stories of his own and hoping that the class would leave with a lesson. Overall, it cannot be considered extemporaneous because, during the video, Jobs looked as though he was looking down at something to read his speech off of. But this is with good reason because Jobs had included some very intellectual words in his speech. This diction had an intended purpose.
Jobs had mentioned at the beginning of his speech of how he honored every student in the crowd because he himself, had never graduated from college. The stories he had told had supported this idea even more. He was trying to inspire the graduates to do great things past college. He even used himself as an example where he is successful himself but he had to go through many hardships to get there. If Jobs can make it big after being dragged down so many times, I will make sure to “Stay hungry” and “Stay foolish” just as he did.

ReplyDeleteI decided to choose Denzel Washington's "Put God First" speech. Denzel speaks in a very strong heart felt manner. His voice is one that will stay on your mind for a while and impact you in various ways. He started the speech of light with a few jokes to keep the crowd engaged early. Denzel openly says how he is nervous. This shows how even the most famous people who speak publicly for a living, get nerous like every other person does. He stated how serious a commencement speech is from acting and how it is "...a whole different ball game".
Mr. Washington was very extemporaneous. He talks about all the acting things and famous people he has spoken too, but also speaks of all the little life experience those Penn students had. "Nothing in life is worth while unless you take risks". This is an extremely strong quote that he used. I was very intrigued when he talked about Thomas Edison's one thousand failed experiments. He stresses that it is ok to fail and be bad at something because it is inevitable. It's that one time in life when you keep trying where your dreams and efforts will come true. Denzel wanted to inspire the graduating students by saying how much he prayed and worked for the upcoming auditions. "If you don't fail, you're not even trying". This powerful sentence shows how no matter what, you have to keep trying and pushing to be the best version of yourself no matter what it may be.
The delivery of his speech for the graduation truly fit amazingly. He related to everyone by asking "What are you going to do with what you have?". He knows that every person on earth has something God given in their own separate ways. This impacts the students and the other audience members. I took a lot of life lessons away from this speech. I have always been told to never give up but it was not explained and portayed the same as Denzel preached it. His use of quotes and life experiences truly inspired me to never give up in what ever my mind is set to and be open to life and the people who come along with it because that is what defines you.

Denzel Washington is an impactful speaker, and to me his one of my favorites. I went over his speech as Coach Boone “Remember the Titans” as my favorite movie speeches. However, he has attended colleges to give graduations speeches and they were all impactful to the audience. Washington attended the UPenn in 2011 to give that commencement speech.
During his speech, he talks about his life and how it was at a low point at one time. 40 years ago, prior to 2011, he was flunking out of college with a 1.7 GPA. However, he had faith and people had faith in him that he will make it big and will travel the world one day. He talks about having dreams and that they are all accomplishable, however you need to have goals in order for those dreams to come true. He ends up thanking his audience and God for all that has happened to him. He became a somebody and is very proud of who he is, all he has to do now is give his gratitude.
The speech was extemporaneous because he had it planned from the beginning. It’s a good topic to give to college graduates and shows how he can connect to the audience. The premise of honoring a milestone that a person has accomplished is showing the effort that was achieved by that person. Most people consider school impossible and don’t think how far they are going to make it, but when you’re at the finish line, it’s a happy moment to look back on where you are and how far you made it. I felt the impact on the language that the speaker by his word choices and repetition. At the end, he repeated his message over and over, so the audience won’t get it over their head. He impacted the audience based on his topic and how the audience can dissect his words and think back to themselves. I learned from this on how a speaker can motivated and connect with an audience based on his language and topic. I also connected on how I’m doing in life and taking time to thankful for what I have going on for me. Overall, Washington nailed his speech and perfected himself as an exquisite speaker.

ReplyDeleteThe speech I chose to write about was Jim Valvano’s March Madness Speech. Right away, he explains to the audience that he values his time greatly, especially because he has cancer and doesn’t know how much longer he has. This creates a strong connection with the audience right away and gets them interested. He explains that there are three things everyone should do every day- laugh, think, cry. If you do all of those, you have a full and special day.
He goes on to explain how was a coach at Rutgers, and how special it was. Giving a talk to his team in the locker room was one of the greatest and most emotional things he could do. As he is telling a story of his past, his body language and storytelling skills are outstanding. He is speaking extemporaneously- he is passionate, informed, and speaking with such ease it is hard to believe that he came into this without any notes. This shows how skilled he is as a speaker since he was able to go in there with an idea of what he was going to say, and then execute it perfectly while captivating the audience.
Valvano brings his speech to a close by pointing out that the timer is flashing “30 seconds” and he says “I’ve got tumors all over my body and you think I’m worried about some guy in the back flashing 30 seconds?”. He says this with a laugh, and the audience laughs along with him. This moment made me feel very inspired because if someone who is terminally ill can make jokes and smile and be happy, then I definitely can too. It definitely puts things into perspective and causes you to reflect on life. He then gives a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson saying, “nothing great can be accomplished without enthusiasm”, and that you need to keep your dreams alive in spite of problems or whatever you have going on in life.
He finishes his speech asking for donations for cancer research, and not to help save him, but to help save his kids, your kids, or a family member. With the support of ESPN, he was able to begin the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. The motto is, “don’t give up, don’t ever give up”. Despite this melancholy close to the speech, the audience is still able to walk away feeling motivated and inspired to take on life from a new perspective.

ReplyDeleteI chose the speech by Denzel Washington that he gave at the 2011 Penn State graduation ceremony. He addressed the graduates about success and congratulated them for accomplishing such a journey. Washington starts the speech with jokes regarding his presence and using his career in acting. He rapidly connected with the audience by referring to the characters he played in movies and honoring how grateful he is to be there. He continues by mentioning how nervous he was when asked to give a speech because he is not used to being in front of thousands of people disregarding that he is a famous actor. He used humor to the best of his ability to communicate to his audience but when it came down to giving advise he was straight forward and used his life as an example. The speech is extemporaneous because he paints an image of what the future might look like for these graduates. He talks to them about their success, in order to succeed in something, you might have to fail many times and he uses his own college life as an example. Washington talks about how he was doing bad in college and regardless of how many new things he tried nothing worked out, but eventually he found his passion because of a lady who saw him being a successful actor. Graduations are meant to congratulate student for achieving the next milestone in their life and motivate them to do more in within the next years. Washington is a remarkable actor and is well known for his movies, this speech made me feel the regular fatherly Denzel Washington. I felt this speech because like he mentions often in order to succeed in life you must face failure first, and even if you falling you should into something you know.
The speech that I choose was Denzel Washington’s “Put God First. Out of all of the speeches I felt like I was the most engaged by this one. The main reason I believe it was so successful is his constant use of hummer throughout it. When I personally see a twenty-minute video I normally think of a long drown out speech. In this case the fact that there was so much humor, it served as a break up in the seriousness and made the audience wonder where he planned to go next.
ReplyDeleteThe main point of the speech was to show how failure is a part of life. Washington is able to drive that point home with the use of an anecdote. In his case sharing about the time he didn’t get the lead role. For instance, he knew that he couldn’t sing, but when they called him back for the acting portion he didn’t know how to act in musical theater. He continues to drive home this point with his second point “If you don’t fail you aren’t trying.” What it means is that you have to take risk in your life. You can never do anything new if you don’t try it first. While in the middle of this point, he says “You will never see a U-Haul behind a hearse.” This is meant to show how what you have in life doesn’t matter; it is what you do that you will be remembered for. His last point was “Failure is the best way to figure out where you want to go.” In his case he changed his major multiple times until he went to a camp and tried acting for the first time.
The other thing that he did was connected with the audience. When I say the audience in this case, I don’t just mean the college graduates. Unlike other speakers that are asked to speak at a college graduation Washington actually connected to the graduates’ parents. He did this by saying how his own son goes to the college and how he “wanted to see how his money was being spent.” He connected to the graduates by sharing his own college experience.
Last but not least, you have his vocal variety. When you normally think of a speech that is given at a collage graduation, most people think of large and complicated words throughout the entirety of the speech. In Washington’s speech there is mostly common language. What I mean by that is its like he was having a conversation with the audience rather then sounding like he knew better then everyone. In fact, he only really used a “big” word once. That was when he had trouble pronouncing “cardiac morphogenesis.” Being willing to have trouble with that sowed that he wasn’t afraid to fail. In essence proving the point of his speech as he went.
To put it simply Denzel Washington used a number of strategies to keep his audience engaged. These include the use of humor and anecdote together. That allowed him to connect to the audience as a whole. In this case the students as well as the audience. Lastly, he was able to drive the point about failure being a part of life thanks to the words he chose.

ReplyDeleteI chose the speech, “Third Grade drop-out” spoken by Rick Rigsby. The main purpose of his speech is to tell people to never give up. Rick went through some difficult obstacles, one of which being the death of his wife. At her funeral, Rick’s father told him to stand tall and never give up. Rick carried his father’s wisdom with him from that day forward. Rick did an excellent job captivating his audience. Throughout his speech he used humor and wit to tell his story in a very effective way. By doing this he made the audience want to listen to him, and hear his story.
I felt very inspired listening to his speech. Rick projected his voice eloquently and had great vocal variety. He was very organized and knew the right time to mention the good stuff and the bad stuff. I can confidently say that I have taken away a great deal from Rick’s speech and feel more motivated.

I have chosen Dr. Rick Rigsby’s “third grade dropout”. This speech is very powerful and strong to its audience. Dr Rick Rigsby is speaking at California State University. He brings up his father who was a third grade dropout and him being the wisest man he knew. His father was an inspirational figure to him teaching himself how to read and write. Quickly the audience realizes that just because this man dropped out of school in third grade, he still gave life everything he got in raising his kids. They realize that trying is where it all starts and giving it your all.
This speech is definitely a powerful one and hard hitting.Rick Rigsby is an excellent speaker and delivers his message very well. He uses comedy to get the crowd's attention and lighting the setting, but he also brings up some tough things like the passing of his wife but to remember his dad's lessons of being strong and standing up. I definitely was impacted by this speech as once I started listening to it the whole way through. It was that good where I just wanted to keep listening and hear what he had to say next.
