“Rocky Balboa/ Sylvester Stallone in Rocky Balboa”
Due Date : November 16, 2018
Thesis statement – A childhood can sometimes be the easiest phase in someone’s life, but once we grow and mature we will experience multiple situations. These situations, at times difficult are a test and we cannot allow ourselves to be manipulated or defined by them. Our actions can be either place us on the path towards success and failure.
Powerful Quote - “It’s not about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward”
What this sentiment is saying that the speaker is inspiring his son to conquer the world and no matter how hard life can get you should be able to get back up and motivate yourself to keep moving forward.
If we were Professor Brady we would rank this speaker a 10/10 because of how extemporaneous he spoke. He spoke with ease and knowledge and his point was very clear and understanding and We thought he was being very helpful and caring to his son; The speaker was educating his son and he spoke with such passion also the audience could learn advice on their lives if they are feeling frowned upon.

Russell Crowe "Gladiator"
Thesis - Handling tough situations alone can be very difficult for an individual. Having a team for support can greater your chances of success.
Powerful Quote - "If we stay together... We survive." With these few words, Russell Crowe was able to inspire the men he was fighting with, and ultimately, win the battle.
We would rank Russell Crowe's speech a 10/10 because it was very motivational. Even though the gladiators were in a life-or-death situation, Russell Crowe was able calm his men down, and eventually survive the fight.
Margaret DiFlora
ReplyDeleteJohn Nash- “A Beautiful Mind”
Thesis: We go through life always wanting to know the reason to why things happen, love can be the reasons to life's unsolved equations.
"I've always believed in numbers. In the equations and logics that lead to reason; but after a lifetime of such pursuits I ask, what truly is logic? Who decides reason? … It is only in the mysterious equations of love that any logical reasons can be found."
This is a quote from John Nash's Nobel Prize speech. His combination of words still speaks a powerful message, it contradicts western society's modern beliefs that love is irrational. He states that the only logical reasons lie within a feeling, an emotion that we have termed 'love'.
John Nash lived his life based on "verifiable, empirical data". He believed in something only when he could explain why. He speaks about love and how true love can solve any equation or logic, it is the reason to everything. Logic is love.
If I was a professor I would rate ts speech a 10/10. He speech is short and to the point. His tone was calm and experienced. He used pathos and showed true emotion throughout the speech when he spoke about love and how he finally found the reasoning to it all. This speech was powerful and clear.
THis is one of my all time favorites! Nice work Margaret!

“Good Will Hunting/What do you wanna do” Robbin Williams
Due date:11/20
Thesis statement: Life is based off experience not reading and judging others. Experience allows us to feel and know what these feelings are. Without experiences of life we do not know real emotions and feelings like love, lost and happiness. These are things you feel in life because what you go through in life and not what you see or read and base things off other people. Yet we have no right to judge other based off what we see or read, we must realize the person in front of us by letting them be themselves by showing us who they are from their experiences.
Powerful Quote: “Do you think I know the first thing about how hard your life has been how you feel who you are because I read Oliver Twist? Does that encapsulate you? Personally, I don’t give a shit about all that because you know what? I can’t learn anything from you I can’t read in some f**** book. Unless you wanna talk about you, who you are. And I’m fascinated.”
If I was a speech professor and if I were to rate this speak from 1-10, I give it a 10. His speech is not short or too long rather right in the middle. His tone displays a calm but firm stance because it is a topic that a father gives to his children and most times parents do lose their temper. Yet he is able to remain composed and reach everything point and he uses examples that involve backstory so the person who listens actual understands and can see that this person has credibility to their words. He was clear overall and got to his points using those points to add to his over all point. You can feel the emotions from his words, the sadness, the happiness and love and does all that to show his point life is made from experiences.

“Carpe Diem, Seize the day” -Dead Poets Society
Thesis- We have to live our lives by the phrase “Carpe Diem”. We have to celebrate live over death and make our lives extraordinary.
Powerful Quote: “...We are food for worms lads...” This quote is powerful because it around the idea that we are all going to die someday so we might as well make this life our best one. We should live our lives by following our own unique paths and disregard what other people will think.
If I was a professor, I would rate this speech a 10/10 because although his speech was short, it delivered a strong message. He spoke with passion which helps bring credibility to his speech.

ReplyDeleteThesis: Coach Gaines in Friday Night Lights delivers a moving and heart throbbing speech at halftime in the state championship game. His outlook is not only about winning or about football he tries to move his players emotionally by appealing to his past obsession with perfection. He tries to make all the players believe they are perfect if they just play their heart out and play to the best of their ability they will be perfect.
“Being perfect is about to look your friends in the eye and know that didn’t let them down, because you told them the truth. And that truth is that you did everything you could. There wasn’t one more thing you could have done.”
The audience can be moved by this quote because most football coaches are touch people who only care about the outcome of a game and they obviously want that outcome to be to win. However, Coach Gaines is just trying to motivate his players to come together and play as hard as they can and be the best football players they can be for their teammates around them. He wants his players to play hard for their friends not for him and not for winning he wants them to leave it all out on the field for their teammates and that will make them perfect.
I believe this speech by Coach Gaines was a great speech. On a scale from 1-10 I would give it a 9. This is because I feel like he sort of lacked emotion in the speech and I know if I was a football coach and my team was losing at half time in the state championship I would be a lot more emotional than he was and I would try to get more out of my players than he did but overall I thought it was a great speech.
Thesis- Coach Gaines’ speech is about believing in yourself, having confidence, and don’t let anyone get inside your head. Being perfect has something to do with you not giving up and giving it your all.
ReplyDeletePowerful Quote: “Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you told them the truth”. This quote affects the whole football team because Coach Gaines was stating that the players should just go out there and play their heart out. His speech increased their confidence and persuaded them to play as hard as they can.
If I was a speech professor, I would give this speech a 10. I felt that Coach Gaines’ speech was very powerful, motivated, and captivating. The speech definitely had a huge positive impact on the football players. The players were extremely inspired by his speech and how extemporaneous he spoke. The speech was emotional and the coach seemed like he had a lot faith in his players. He was very inspirational and encouraging toward the football players. This showed how much he cared about his players and wanted them to give everything they got. Overall, it was a great speech and I really enjoyed it.

Sylvester Stallone’s Speech in Rocky Balboa
Thesis: No matter what happens in life there will always be challenges every corner you turn. The real winners are the one who get past these obstacles, realize that you are the only person that is holding yourself back, and keep pushing forward no matter what.
Powerful Quote: “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”. The impact that this quote has truly impacts every single member of the audience. Everybody in life goes through these struggles and try to blame it on other people, or they simply just don’t try anymore and give up. You have to believe in yourself and keep pushing forward even though you will face many challenges in life. The people who strive towards their goal and push through the challenges are the winners.
If I was a professor I would rate this speech a 10/10. The reason I would rate this speech a 10/10 is because every single time that I listen to this speech I get chills and I feel motivated to jump out of my seat and follow my dreams. The way he spoke with such passion and emotion captivated me right off the start. Even by his body language alone he would get a 10/10 for this speech because it’s just shown how passionate he is about what he is saying. That’s why Sylvester Stallone would get a 10/10 on that speech if I was a professor.
I agree Rob! Stallone is extremely captivating. Nice response!

ReplyDelete“You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men. You have the love of humanity in your hearts…”
People have the power to shape humanity as a whole. We have gotten distracted from the aspects of the life that are actually important to human civilization. Nothing in this world is set in stone and It is up to us, the people, to set the morals and ideals of life.
This speech is incredibly emotional and connects with the audience for so many reasons. I would rate this speech a 9 and the biggest reason why is because of how he presented it. He starts off calmly and honestly, I wasn’t fully engaged. But slowly his tone of voice becomes more powerful and it’s almost impossible to not pay attention. The emotions behind his voice can be felt and are relatable. Even though what he was talking about was amazingly moving as well, the way he spoke made the speech. I rate this a 9 however because nothing is ever perfect, but this speech is as close to perfect as it can be.

ReplyDeleteProfessor Brady Denzel Washington Remember the Titians Gettysburg
After watching the clip of Remember the Titans, I have learned that Denzel Washington puts out a very strong point. The song point he puts out there can be used in many other situations other than football, more of life and working together. “ Listen, Take a lesson from the dead, If we don’t come together right now on this hollow ground, we too will be destroyed” -Denzel Washington. This quote is powerful in many different ways. Washington takes his football players to a grave yard where Gettysburg war was and said the quote above. The players did not like each other but Washingtons explanation is if we don’t work together we are going to be dead just like them. This is what the audience see’s in the movie. But, it applies to life also. This quote can be one of the main fixes of problems such bullying and bystanders. For example, if someone is being bullied and everyone is just watching, its only going to make the situation worse. But if someone comes out and helps or tells the bully to leave that person alone, it makes the situation much better and everyone “ will not be destroyed”. In other words Denzel Washington is saying “take a lesson from the dead”, leave the past behind and respect each other. If I was a speech professor I would give this speech a 10 out of 10. The 10 represents how strong and how it can be used as an example with real life problems and real life. Denzel Washington meets that criteria.

Tyler Durden Speech
Thesis- Society has created an image of what we are supposed to be. This has caused the average person to chase dreams of material possessions rather then a fulfilled life of freedom.
Quote- "Slaves in white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes. Working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we dont need"
This quote has a big impact on the audience because it is very relatable. When Tyler is speaking if feels as though he is talking directly to each member of the audience and it keeps you intreaged about what hes going to say next. This quote is a thought that everyone has had one time or another. Is live really about a big house and a fancy car? Or is it about freedom and self expression.
Grade- if i was a professor i would give this speech a 10/10. Tyler exhibits techniques that make a speech great. He is an exterperanious speaker, he's passionate about what hes saying. He engages his audience, he makes eye contact, he uses pauses. Tyler walks around the room keeping all eyes on him. His words are relatable and powerful. He uses imagery by referring to people in offices as "slaves in white collars" rather than metal chains. In this speach Tyler not only keeps you interested while he speaks but he makes you question your own reality and to me that is what makes a great speech.

ReplyDeleteBraveheart Freedom Speech
Thesis: William Wallace’s speech to the army is specifically meant to provide hope and motivation. He wants the people to not give up and risk it all for their freedom.
Quote: “they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom”
This is a powerful quote because it is a simple, yet memorable and strong line. It resonates with those who are fighting for their freedom. Wallace wants the army to understand what it is they would be fighting for. He asks, “What would you do with that freedom? Will you fight?” These two are powerful quotes.
If I were a speech professor, I would give this speech a 10 out of 10. Not only did the speech personally make me feel motivated to fight for Scotland. The speech starts off with a joke and manages to end off powerful and makes the audience cheer for him. It would fit all of my criteria. In my personal opinion, if an audience is interacting with the speaker or resonating with the speaker, then the speaker has done his job correctly of delivering said speech.
ReplyDeleteI decided to go with a movie quote/speech that was not on your list, but I think it applies. Its from "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and its one of my all time favorite movies.
"Life" is about stepping out of your comfort zone. Its about becoming unstuck and moving forward. Its about living by the ABC's; Adventurous, Bravery, and Courageous. You cannot just dream, you have to move and make that dream happen. Its about being present in your life and not just living but building the life you want.
Although there are many, my favorite quote is so powerful that my son actually got it tattooed on his rib cage after seeing the movie!
"To see the world, things thousands of miles away, things hidden behind walls, and within rooms, things dangerous to come to, to draw closer, to find each other and feel, to see and be amazed, that is the purpose of life".
Whats so powerful about this quote is its simplicity. Its about seeing beyond the obvious, really looking, feeling, and loving each other. To be able to see all these things and be amazed by all of it.
Personally, I would say this speech is up there with the best of them. It may not be loud or obvious but its so powerful. it touches your soul and is very thought provoking. It resonates with you and that is what makes it a 10!
Thesis- Sometimes for freedom, one has to make the ultimate sacrifice. Change requires putting everything on the line even if death is on the table.
ReplyDelete“Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you'll live -- at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!!!”
This quote is by the character William Wallace who is talking to his fellow scots trying to persuade them to fight for Scottish independence from England. The men he’s talking to are contemplating fighting for freedom or walking away with the hope of survival. He emphasizes that though they might live to see another day, they will regret not fighting for their country. It’s an important speech because in the movie you see many scots being killed, the women being raped, and villages being destroyed. William Wallace has had enough and wants his fellow warriors to be enraged enough to go into battle. In his speech he speaks about one thing being inevitable no matter what side they choose, and that’s death. You can die with honor or you can die with regret. As an audience, I think naturally most of us would choose the one that we felt was morally right. Being able to watch with distance between the screen, the obvious answer is to fight for your country and do right by your people.
If i was assessing this speech, I would say it’s powerful not only because of the words but because of the visual symbolism you see when you watch. Wallace’s face is painted in Scottish blue and he’s moving around on his horse amping the crowd up. His words don’t contain any outstanding vocabulary but it’s the message he is sending that stands out. He doesn’t want his people to be enslaved and he ends the speech with the most powerful statement. “They make take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom.” He’s asking them, are you going to be the reason we stay enslaved to England? Or are you going to fight for a cause that is so much bigger than you, because together, they are Scotland.

John Feiner,
ReplyDeleteI decided to use a speech from the movie 300 about the Persian empire closing in and expanding into Greek territories, they send a messenger to Sparta asking for their surrender. The thesis of the speech given by King Leonidas is Sparta will not surrender with representation of weakness to the enemy. Although overwhelming odds, never stop fighting for your freedom from a higher power.
The quote "You bring the crowns and heads of conquered kings to my city steps. You insult my queen. You threaten my people with slavery and death! Oh, I've chosen my words carefully, Persian. Perhaps you should have done the same!" The frustration and anger of disrespect towards the Spartans caused a King to stand his ground and send a message to the Persians. The power and pauses in his voice emphasize the serious nature of life and death. Followed by the quote"This is Sparta" and kicking the messenger into the pit of his death shows how powerful his statement and action was.
If i were to evaluate this speech i would give it a 10/10, with a threat beyond imagination the strength of spartan values and to fight for their right to live.

Thesis: Life is going to be filled with many obstacles. No matter what is thrown at you during your life, you are the one who has to be mentally strong and push yourself forward to reach success.
Powerful Quote: “You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” What Stallone is trying to say here is that no matter how hard life hits you, you have to get up and push yourself to move forward.
If I was a speech professor, I would rate this speech a 10/10. Stallone has an amazing tone. He is articulate and an extemporaneous speaker. He is a passionate and emotional speaker, which is very captivating. Listening to this speech motivated me to be strong mentally and fight any obstacle that comes towards me.

ReplyDeleteDenzel Washington- “Remember the Titans”
Thesis: Denzel is telling his players to put aside their blind hatred for each other and to unite as brothers before their ignorance takes the best of them.
Powerful quote: “50,000 men died right here on this field fighting the same fight that we’re still fighting amongst ourselves today.. Take a lesson from the dead.. If we dont come together, right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed”
This quote is powerful because Denzel puts it into perspective on how deadly racism and discrimination is. When he says this the students change their mindset and opinions about each other and stop hating each other for no reason.
I rank this speech a 10/10 because it’s extremely passionate and motivational. He captivated everyone’s attention and motivated them to become better people. The speech was powerful, to the point, and very captivating. Denzel is definitely an extemporaneous speaker.

ReplyDeleteI had decided to do the movie speech on the moment when Rocky Balboa is giving a speech to his son before he is about to go on to fight the following day.
Thesis- While you grow up, your innocent, nice and responsible, but eventually the day comes that you face the world, and you change. The world isn't an easy place to live in, but life isn't how well you do. its about dealing with situations and moving on.
Quote- "It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and still moving forward."
If I were a speech professor, I would give this speech a 10/10, as he was giving this compelling speech to his son, you can just feel all the emotion that he is putting behind it. I would consider him an extemporaneous speaker, and how he is trying to explain to his son the real truth behind certain things in the world, and like he had said the world isn't all sunshine and rainbows and that things will kick you down, but it is important how fast you are able to pick yourself back up once it happens.

The speech I choose was the Sylvester Stallone motivational speech to his son in the movie Rocky Balboa. The while the speech short it is very powerful, his point is that life will always have its tests and when they come they will be tough but that what life is about. We must be able to take hits from difficult obstacles, but eventually get over them we can never give up on ourselves because that is when we fail.
A powerful quote from the speech to me is when Sylvester Stallone said “You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward it’s about how much you can take and keep moving forward that's how winning is done. Now if you know what your worth then go out and get what your worth, but you gotta be willing to take the hits and not pointing fingers because of him or her or anybody cowards do that and that ain't you your better than that.” This quote has a great impact on the audience because of his powerful words that anyone that has ever went through any type of struggle can relate to and see why no matter how hard life can seem to get at times we must push through because in the end we must better ourselves and not let life have a foot on our necks in order to succeed for ourselves.
In my opinion on a scale from 1-10 this speech would be a 10. I felt this speech and continue to feel it every time i even hear a couple words from the speech. For years it has stuck with me and gave me hope. Not only does it bring me a great sense of hope but motivation that we can all relate to when life has us in a dark corner it’s a test to see what our next step will be. However as Sylvester Stallone said giving up isn’t a option we must get up and push after every hit because that is how we are made and how we better ourselves in life. The tone he used in the speech was moving and his words were felt which is most important for me because I took a great life lesson away from it.

ReplyDeleteSylvester Stallone, “Rocky Balboa”
Thesis: Blaming others for our short comings is the easy way out and there is no easy way out in life.
Quote: ’Life is not about how hard you can hit. It is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is due.”
I have to admit I am a big Stallone follower, specially the Rocky movies. A lot of people will say that Stallone is not a good actor. However, in this scene, I believe he deliver on point. He sounded like an average Joe speaking to his song and that is why it is easy to be inspired by it.
Stallone starts by telling his son how much he loves him and how proud he was of being part of the man he was becoming. He uses this technique to brake his son down. His son put his guard down and started paying attention. I believe this is how you persuade people. Take their guard down so they can take in what you are telling them. Stallone then describe what he thinks his son is doing wrong and sums it up by saying “Cowards do that, and that isn’t you” Now his son has no other way out but to stop acting like a coward. The facial expression and the tone of voice allows you to feel the love of a father to a son. The conclusion to the speech is great. Stallone tells his son he is always going to love him and walks away without even hugging his son and tells him “Don’t forget to visit your mother” This says to me, until you stop being a coward and stop making excuses for yourself, stay away from me, but I love you.
I would give this speech a 10 out of 10 score. Stallone listened to his son, acknowledge that he was upset, but never apologized or agreed with him. Structure of this speech makes the flow beautiful. First he tells him how proud he is of him, so that his son puts his guard down. Secondly, Stallone tells him to stop making excuses for his short comings because that is what cowards do and “You are better than that”. He closes out by walking away telling him to keep fighting back and to never give up, but he does it in a way that his son has no choice but to change the way he is acting, very inspiring speech.
HERMAN BOONE/DENZEL WASHINGTON IN 'REMEMBER THE TITANS'
ReplyDeleteThesis: we don’t come together as a nation we are bond to repeat our ancestors mistakes and experience their hardships. “Take a lesson from the dead if we don’t come together ,right now on these hallow grounds, we too will be destroyed just like they were “ I believe this part of the speech motivated the audience the most because coach Herman Boone(Denzel Washington) lead up to that part of the speech with the fight in Gettysburg. I believe this speech was motivational because it really highlighted to the young men that they could do better and if they didn’t they too would fall victim to the same fate. I believe Denzel Washington was an amazing speaker he talked with fluidity and a great tone that captured his audience attention. If I was grading this speech I would give it a strong 9 out of 1-10 because he made a very impactful beginning with facts and his speech was very I inspirational.

Thesis Statement- John Candy (Del Griffith) was very articulate and confident about what he had stated to Steve Martin (Neal Page). He was insulted for speaking too much but basically shut down his bully in a polite and kind way.

I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get.
If I were professor brady I would rate this speech or quote a 10 out of 10. This is because it was touching, powerful, polite, non-profanity, and to the point. At the same time, he had an amazing tone and great facial gestures. RIP John Candy- 10/31/1950 – 03/04/1994.

ReplyDeleteJOHN H. MILLER/TOM HANKS IN 'SAVING PRIVATE RYAN'
Thesis: Captain John Miller's (Tom Hanks) speech gives motivation to soldiers in his platoon. They have started to lose faith in what they’re doing, one of the soldiers even has his gun pointed to the head of another soldier. Miller simply starts off by asking what the pool on him is up to and then tells the soldiers his backstory and why he will not give up on the mission of saving Private Ryan. This lessens the tension in the group and has them pay attention to what he is saying. After his speech, Miller leads them to get back together and finish the mission.
Quote: "I don't know anything about Ryan, I don't care. Man means nothing to me, its just a name. But if going to Ramel and finding him so he can go home, if that earns me the right to get back to my wife, well then thats my mission". This quote is powerful because it shows that even though Miller does not know Ryan personally, he will still complete the mission because he wants to finally get to go home and see his wife. This makes all the soldiers realize what they were doing was stupid and puts them on track to go back and finish what they started so they can go home.
If I was a speech professor, I would rate this speech a 10/10. Overall, I feel that his speech was great and very powerful. The language he uses was full of emotion and because of that, it was motivational. The speech clearly worked because after it, the soldiers stopped fighting and went back to finish their job.

Speech : Maximus/Russell Crowe In “Gladiator”
Thesis: We live in a world where one fights for themselves but in order to survive we must work together and be able to rely on one another, without being able to have someone to lean on we become defenseless towards obstacles that come our way!
Quote: “Whatever comes out of those gates, we have a better chance of survival IF WE WORK TOGETHER” “ IF we work together we SURVIVE HOLD….TOGETHER….TOGETHER”
I believe this speech is very inspirational, it teaches whoever listens to the speech that as one person you’ll fight but as we stand together we shall survive! I rate this speech a 10/10 because it teaches a very valuable lesson in some short simple words and a very interesting and eye catching scene.

ReplyDeleteFortune/Charles S. Dutton in Rudy
Thesis: Its to never give up on yourself even if you fail at first. Because if you do you might regret it for the rest of your life wishing you never did.
Powerful Quote: “ I’ve never seen a game from the stands, I road the bench for 2 years, thought I wasn’t being played for my color, I got filled up with a lot of attitude so I quit. Not a week goes by I don’t regret it”. This quote is so powerful because it shows how he went through a hard 2 years on the football team but still regretted quitting. He shares this with Rudy so he wouldn’t make the same mistake his did a long time ago and to just keep going and not to quit on himself.
Evaluating Speech: I would give the speech a 9 because the speech the man gives to Rudy is really powerful. It inspires Rudy and the audience to not give up on themselves even when times are tough. And over all it was just a great speech that I enjoyed watching.

ReplyDeleteTom Hanks “Saving Private Ryan”
Thesis:Tom Hanks persuades the rest of his soldiers to in a time that they are losing all faith in what they are doing. He begins talking with a random question that gets everyone hooked onto what he has to say. He motivates his team with a very calm and even tone through out, and uses the look into his back story and profession to give the soldiers the will to push forward with the mission. This eases tensions between the soldiers who had a gun pointed at each other.
Powerful Quote: “If going to Remel and finding him earns me the right to go home to my wife, then thats my mission, wanna leave? Alright, alright, I wont stop you, ill even put in the paperwork, just know that every man I kill the farther away from home I feel”
He gives a look into his backstory to encourage these men to motivate the men to continue with the mission. He was a captain who was tight lipped and no one knew where he had come from. He reveals his profession as a teacher before the war, and how people at home figured as such but over at war they find it a big mystery. He feels that he has changed and this gives the soldiers something to relate to as they probably feel as though they changed as well.
I would grade this piece 8 out of 10 it portrayed passion and feeling, a sense of compassion that persuaded his soldiers to look past and rise above the negative to finish the mission that they have started. It was a moving piece that entailed inspiration are impacted those who he had spoke to.

Speeh:FORTUNE/CHARLES S. DUTTON IN 'RUDY'
Thesis: You should not give up on your dreams no matter what obstacle. In life the opinions of others are irreverent, what is important is what you think of yourself.
"I got filled up with a lot of attitude, so I quit. Still not a week goes by, I don't regret it. And I guarantee a week won't go by, you won't regret walking out letting them get the best of you." Rudy is a feel good movie about an underdog trying his best to live his dream of playing football for his favorite college. All his life he was told to just give up on it, but despite that he persevered. This quote come in a moment where most people who have gone through similar experience give up. Undoubtedly there are people who see the scene and remember when they gave up their chance to fulfill their dream. Seeing themselves in Rudy such as Fortune does. This makes the audience root for Rudy even more as they feel a connection to the character. If I was grading the speech I would give it a 10. When people are in a depressed mood the last thing they want to hear is a long lecture about never giving up. Fortune's speech was short an to the point. Sharing his regret gave Rudy a new perspective in life. It was relatable to Rudy's situation and a what not to do is more impactful than telling him what he already knew. Very extemporaneous.

"Russel Crow: Gladiator"
Thesis - We have to fight for what we believe in. For who we love and what we love, we sacrifice.
Powerful Quote - "Father to murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." This quote is powerful because it shows the loyalty and drive that the Gladiator had. He fought to the death for his family that he lost. He wanted payback/revenge for his loved ones. Whether it was in this life or the next.
If I was a professor I would rate this speach a 10/10. Even though it was very short, it was very strong and he got his point across over a few select words. He spoke with a strong tone and made the speach very powerful

Sylvester Stallone in ‘Rocky Balboa’
Thesis - Rocky shows his son some “tough” love. He doesn’t want to sugar-coat his talk. He tries opening his son’s eyes to the cruel reality, that is life! He tells it like it is; that life is hard and it will knock us down. We must be strong. We have to persevere, pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and take responsibility for our actions.
Quote - “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”
This is a powerful speech that touches the audience’s heart. Right from the beginning, Rocky’s son asked if he was scared about the fight. In his calm and collected way, Rocky replies that he is scared although he doesn’t show it. That’s what I like about all the Rocky movies; that he doesn’t portray himself as a hero, but more like an average person. Rocky sends the message that, the harder you get knocked down, the stronger it makes you. In just two minutes (and in a loving way) Rocky recollects his son’s life, praises him, teaches him a life lesson, and leaves him speechless! Rocky delivered his wisdom in a tone of voice that captivates and tunes in the audience.
Rocky is definitely an extemporaneous speaker. His deliverance of words is strong, confident and impactful. It leaves the audience captivated. I would rate this speech a ten out of ten for such a strong performance. I have heard this speech countless times, and every time it gives me the goosebumps. You can tell that his son is taken by it. He appears speechless and touched by his father’s heart warming words. I feel confident the this speech not only motivated his son’s view on life, but also the outside audience’s view as well.
