    Grit
Angela Lee Duckworth grit speeches are extremely informative and successful in proving her point that Grit is the most important factor in whether one succeeds at their task. Starting with her intro she uses a hook that was relevant and easy to understand. That hook being in her 2009 speech, her resume, that bounced all over from teacher in multiple states to C.O.O of a nonprofit organization. As she stated impressive, but she has no grit due to her lack of sustained passion and perseverance in those sectors. Also, in her main points she breaks down her points by starting with a question of why people in their field are successful, and then measures grit next to the other two criteria considered important for success, intelligence, and self-discipline. Each time it was shown that the ones with grit always performed better, even if they lacked or excelled in the skill, intelligence, and self-discipline in that field. Lastly, to end this segment. The speeches of Angela Lee Duckworth are informative. They provide information and teach the listener that success is not all due to the talent or intelligent of and individual, but due to their passion and tenacity, their grit. Also, in her 2013 speech she explains a possible way to install grit in individuals, that way being a growth mind set, which empathizes that failure is not permanent, that just because you are horrible at something today doesn’t men that you will still be horrendous at it in a year. The idea that if you stay passionate and tenacious, you will succeed.

    Happiness
Shawn Anchor speech on happiness was phenomenal. In his speech he defines happiness as the view on our situation. He also says that happiness does not stem from success, but that success stems from happiness. To add, he does uses multiple speech techniques to inform the listener. One being his use of statistic to enforce his main point, second and third being his use of anecdotes and humor. Both personalize the point to make it much more Digestible. Most importantly though, the humor proves his point, as one point was that we accel in all fields when we are positive, so what better way to practice that in a speech by keeping the audience laughing so there in a good mood, therefore their brains are at a higher capacity. Lastly, he does captivate his audience but more importantly he created a long-lasting impact on them that they will spread to others.

    Grit Speech
Angela Lee Duckworth is a very articulate speaker and she is very informative with her speeches. Angela’s hook is very intriguing to the audience because she goes back and tells an anecdote about what she had done from the age between 22 to 32 and what she thought would be good for a resume. She connects this anecdote to her main points which is grit. She also breaks her main points by asking people she knew who were at the top of their respective fields and how they got there. Grit is measured on how an individual could be successful based on the survey they give and how intelligence and self-discipline can play a factor in this. She notices that grit would overtake people who were intelligent or were self-disciplined. She came to the conclusion that people who are gritty will work harder on what they don’t know and mainly focus on their weaknesses and just work on that, which makes them achieve more. Finally, in her 2013 speech, she explains how grit could be installed into people and that you should be comfortable with failing because that will show if you have real grit or not. Grit is based on how much effort you put into something and if you will keep on putting that same effort in every time, no matter the talent you may possess or how intelligent you might be.

    Happiness Speech
This speech on happiness that Shawn Anchor talks about is a really informative speech. He defines happiness as to how we handle our situation. He also talks about how happiness is that if we are successful then we will be happier but in reality, we have to have a positive mindset and we have to be happy to get to the success we want to get to. Throughout his speech, he portrays many different speech techniques we learned in class. One of the speech techniques he uses is that in his introduction he started with an anecdote to gain the audience’s attention. Another technique he uses is the use of humor throughout his speech to keep his audience intrigued. Lastly, he uses statistics to back his main point of how being happy can make an individual be more successful. Finally, he does captivate his audience by using the speech techniques and by making the audience so interested in his speech.

    2. Hello Aldair,
I completely agree with you that both speakers are well articulated and able to present a well informative speech. Also, while both use different methods I agree that, Angela Lee Duckworth use of multiple different example from those we see as the heads of society to prover her point and Shawn Anchor more humor base approach are as equally effective.

  3. Grit Speech
Angela Lee Duckworth is very informative when it comes to her speech as to how grit unlocks people’s potential. For her hook she begins by talking about her life and what’s she accomplished or done academically giving her credibility. This gives her relevance behind the subject she is covering which is that people with grit actually end up becoming more successful rather than people with other attributes alone. She measures grit to intelligence and self- discipline to supplement this. She also uses the out-come of a spelling bee to show that kids with more grit ended up doing better. She informs the audience about how to obtain grit through preserving through a tough situation and staying on tasks, not abandoning them no matter their difficulty. She expresses that being comfortable with failure is okay as long as you have the desire to get better tomorrow. if you keep at it you will eventually succeed through your determination and grit.

    Happiness Speech
Shawn Anchor believes you make your own happiness depending on your outlook of a situation. Anchor does a great job or captivating his audience in his informative speech. He expresses his idea on happiness through a story about when him and his sister were younger playing a game of war. He pushes his sister off the bed and when she gets upset about it about it, he calls her a unicorn and it actually results in her not crying. He also uses a multitude of jokes to keep the audience involved. He provides statistics such as your brain working 37% better at positive than at negative, expressing that reversing the formula for happiness and success could go a long way.

    Grit speech
Duckworth’s introduction to her speech and how she hooks the audience is how she explained how she grew up and what she has accomplished in life. She ties that to GRIT on how important it is that we should bring that in our life. The main idea in her speech is how she argues that an individual's grit is a better predictor of long-term success, more than talent or IQ. Grit is a combination of passion and perseverance for long-term goals She breaks this down into points by providing us real information on statistics, visuals, and quotes to help the audience to be engaged and listen throughout her whole speech. Her speech is informative because I learned what GRIT is and how important it should be in my life. “Grit” shapes our understanding of success by having a plan or a 10-year plan like Duckworth to see where we stand in life and if he made any changes. Grit is not something you are born with, but it is something that can be taught. Grit can be taught because it enables individuals to work hard and stick to their long-term passions and goals. If I gave an informative speech or had to teach someone, I would pick a topic I love. It would be something to do on the way we consume food or how sports injuries affect our life. I am not really sure what I would pick, but I would want to teach other people about some kind our issue we have in the world.

    Happiness Speech
I define happiness as being content with your life and surrounding yourself with positive things, or people like family or friends that make you feel good about yourself throughout your life. To be happy means allowing yourself to also be unhappy. But being happy is like I said before surrounding yourself with friends and family that bring you positivity in life. The purpose of Anchor’s speech is cutting the edge of positive psychology and neuroscience to clearly demonstrate how one can become a “positive genius”. Anchor does use multiple techniques throughout his speech and that is using visuals like graphs and case studies to provide information to back up his main point. He does captivate his audience by providing the graphs and case studies to keep the audience engaged and to be more inform of his topic. Not only was he making the audience laugh, but he kept his speech interesting and more alive through his body language and tone.

    Duckworth’s “Grit”
Duckworth’s “Grit” was not only informative but entertaining. She starts off her speech with a hook that should have caught almost all of our attention, which was talking about grad school. All of us being in a college environment, grad school might have crossed all of our minds and held our attention. She relates her hook about how she was in grad school, and compares herself to her peers, making the realization that her story is one of not having grit. Even though her story is one of intelligence, her thesis states that people with grit overpower people with intelligence and self-discipline alone. Duckworth breaks her main point down into parts and provides us information by giving us different perspectives, different statistics, and at the end using different quotes. This speech is very entertaining, and allowed me to learn more about grit, and how it is an important quality we can all grow and learn from.

    Achor’s “Happiness”
I personally can not define happiness. I only know it as a feeling of lightness, where I wake up and I can get myself out of bed, and I can encourage myself to get through the day. The purpose of Achor’s speech is to tell us where happiness lies, and in today’s world happiness is related to success where the “goal post” keeps moving forward and we will never reach it. Achor tells us stories. Like of him and his sister, as well as using visuals, like graphs. He also uses jokes, which ties the speech together and keeps everyone’s attention on him.

    Grit Speech

Angela Lee Duckworth speech on grit was very informative. She gives a lot of data to prove her point. Angela knows what she is talking about and it gets the audience into the speech because of her passion for the subject she is talking about. She starts the speech with simply introducing herself as a psychologist. She talks about her personal life and give an analogy about how she’s a pretty boat that goes super-fast, but the boat ultimately goes nowhere. She then jumps right into her speech and give us the data. She uses studies and examples from people everyone knows such as Charles Darwin, and studies with normal people. This shows the audience that grit is key for success in everyone’s life. Finally, she ends her speech with quotes and talking about award winning actors and how most of their first movies weren’t very good. Overall, I think Angela is very smart and accomplished women. I found her speech to be very interesting; I had never really thought that having grit was that important to one’s success. This speech taught me otherwise.

    Happiness Speech

Shawn Achor is an incredibly funny man, the way he began his speech was basically a comedy special on Netflix. He talks about when he and his sister were little they were playing together and he pushed her off their bunk bed, breaking her leg. After finishing telling the story he has a very smooth Segway into the main ideas of his speech. Shawn talks about how highlighting the negative is not the best way to go. Yes, people need to know about dangers, but if that all they learn about that’s all they’re going to think is out there. Success is not directly related to happiness. Once you become successful that’s never the end. You have to continue getting better. If people believe that if you’re successful they will never get there and become happy. I have to say I think this is my favorite speech that we’ve watched so far. The topic was so interesting and Chris’ use of comedy tying into his topic was amazing to watch.

Angela Lee Duckworth gives an informative speech on the concept of grit as a very articulate, calm speaker. Her speech discusses the idea of how grit can enable one’s fullest potential leading to greater success. Duckworth begins her speech with background information that includes an anecdote or her own story. She immediately hooks the audience by providing personal information of her early college years. She includes details of her personal life when she speaks of her resume and prior job experiences, as well as how she felt emotionally during these times. Her hook is relevant in emphasizing her main points being that she connects her anecdote or story to her thesis. The overall main idea that Duckworth presents to her listeners is the concept that having grit would lead to success. She claims that IQ scores nor talent are determining factors of our success, but it is rather our grittiness that can indicate this. Duckworth breaks down her main points into parts to help provide powerful and meaningful information to her audience by providing information such as statistics, quotes, and mentioning the viewpoints of others. Grit is the amount of effort and dedication you put into something. After listening to Duckworth’s speech, I felt much more knowledgeable of this idea. She was most definitely an entertaining, well-planned speaker who was very passionate about her research.

Along the lines of a dictionary, the term “happiness” is known to be a feeling that is felt when one is joyous or content with their life. To me, happiness can simply be defined as the feeling you get when life is good. Shawn Achor’s speech, was given to inform the audience that happiness is our personal view on a situation. He states that success will lead to greater happiness in life, but having an overall positive mindset will lead to both success and happiness. Achor uses a variety of techniques within his speech. He includes anecdotes as well as humor. His humor and constant jokes, which I found most entertaining and captivating kept the audience engaged and laughing throughout the entire speech.

    Duckworths "Grit"
During her speech she had everyone focused and kept everyone focused on what she was talking about. She was funny while still being informative. She established credibility by explaining what her accomplishments have been. This speech is informative because she explains GRIT and how having GRIT could lead to better success or understanding someones GRIT could help understand them. She said that people that scored high on a test had high GRIT not IQ scores, this helps prove her point that GRIT is a better indicator for long term success. Another point that could have been taken was GRIT is more on yourself, with how far you'll push yourself to go or your discipline. If you have GRIT you are more likely to succeed in most things you do because you have the drive to do it.

    Happiness
I define happiness by your attitude towards life and the people you surround yourself with. If you push yourself to do the best then you will always feel the best and happy. Shawn Anchor had an amazing TED talk, he was very funny which kept the audience listening. He said something along the lines that once you stop matching happiness with success then you will be much happier. That is something that many people can probably relate to but also shows that you can be happy on your own and the things that you do. Anchor also stated that you can know everything about someones external but that will not lead you to knowing anything about their happiness and that you realistically can never tell someones happiness by just talking to them.

  10. Grit speech
Angela Lee Duckworth is a very well organized orator, which makes the speech easier to understand. Also helps get her point across better and lets the speech be as informative as it is. Her introductory anecdote does a very good job luring the audience in because of relatable it is for everyone. It also helps lead into her main point of grit and how people that have girt end up being more successful in life. She distributes a test that measures the level of grit to intelligence and self- discipline. The results showed her point that be people with grit end up doing better than people that don’t have that attribute. She explains how to obtain grit by not giving up in tough situations and pushing through it. A failure in something is not bad, it is just something that you need to work on and keep growing in.

    Happiness Speech
Shawn Anchors speech on happiness was very captivating. In the speech he describes happiness as our own personal outlook on the world. His purpose it try to gain people more success in happiness. In his speech he mentions how the happier you are the more success you are like to achieve. He uses an anecdote to start his speech off, this was a great one the best I have yet to see. Also tied in with the anecdote and the whole speech is a sense of humor which keeps that crowd involved and active. Finally, he does captivate the audience by leaving with a great life lesson to experiment with and test on their own.

    Grit speech
In Duckworths speech, she emphasises the word “Grit” successfully. She begins with an anecdote, immediately catching the attention of others. Throughout her speech, she allows us to understand that grit shapes our understanding of success. Someone with perseverance, meaning someone who will never give up after a setback has higher grit than someone who lets their setbacks define them. Grit is something that can be taught. After a setback, when you teach yourself to come back harder, that is grit. Grit can be taught when we want to give up.

    Happiness speech
To be happy is not only the way we view the world but it is a feeling of great joy and overwhelming confidence in what you did or achieve. Achors speech was very entertaining. He explains the correlation between happiness, and success. He used anecdotes to his advantage and keeps the audiences attention throughout his whole speech with his sense of humor.

  12. Grit-Angela Lee Duckworth
I think this speech is very informative. Angela Duckworth utilizes different studies she has conducted in order to back up her main point that having grit, or long term perseverance, is more important to success and becoming an expert in a particular field than having talent. Duckworth establishes credibility while she is speaking by first telling the audience about her experience of not having grit; how she has had multiple different roles in life and took her a long time to choose one path to work on. She even makes a comparison between herself and a fast, shining boat that changes its course often and never reaches its final destination. Duckworth then goes into detail and breaks down the different studies she has completed demonstrating the importance of grit in both candidates at West Point and contestants in a spelling bee. I think grit shows us that in order to find success we must not make too many changes in our studies based on having “change’ and trends, but rather, we pursue a career for some time in order to build up our skills and become what many consider to be a “professional.”

    Happiness-Shawn Anchor
I really thought that Shawn Anchor did fantastic at captivating his audience and keeping them engaged in his speech and his topic. He begins with an anecdote about how him and his little sister while making jokes about his experiences. He is able to interact with the audience by making jokes about them, mentioning he met the one weird red dot in the room earlier and jokingly criticizes the modern psychology system and what it prioritizes in its studies. By adding an anecdote, his sense of sarcasm and transparency, Anchor gets the audience laughing and makes them engaged throughout his entire presentation. Anchor expresses that being happy does not come from success alone. In order to be happy, one must instead focus on what is better for them rather than setting higher goals for themselves and worrying about the competition. The purpose of Anchor’s speech is that society needs to shift its priority form focusing on productivity, good grades, talent, and success to focusing on what are minds are capable of when we are actually happy.

    Grit - Angela Duckworth
Grit is a quality that most people use or utilize to achieve success and achievement. My understanding of grit has shaped my perspective of success because I learned that it is through sustained passion and perseverance that someone can attain achievement and success. This trait is incomparable with talent because it can help someone achieve great success in everything he engages in through hard work, focus, and passion. A lack of perseverance and passion can lead to failure. However, grit is a trait that anyone can teach and utilize to achieve success or any goals. It is incomparable with a talent that someone is born with. That means grit can be adapted by anyone or be trained. People are not born with grit, but through passion and perseverance, one acquires the trait. An informative speech gives general information about something, and it involves charts, demonstrations, and examples to sensitize the required information to the audience effectively. I would learn to use various demonstrations and informative charts or projections and have passion. The speech given by Angela Duckworth was informative because she demonstrated some information about grit and involved examples to sensitize her information. I learned that the grit trait is a tool for success and achievement and is incomparable with talent.

    Happiness - Shawn Anchor
According to Shawn Anchor, Happiness is the joy of striving for someone's potential and the belief that change or success is possible in all aspects. Positive performance leads to success and achievement, and when success is attained, then happiness comes in. When someone's brain is positive, then it performs better than someone who is stressed. Having a positive mindset brings happiness as well as success. According to Anchor, brain positivity gives happiness to the energy, which leads to success and achievement.  The purpose of Shawn Anchor’s speech is to teach people to understand more about happiness and deliver its deeper meaning to achieve success in all they do. The speech itself is informative about happiness, as evidenced by the audience’s mood of happiness in the entire speech. Anchor used various speech techniques to keep his audience alert and attentive and relative to the topic. He used the hyperbole technique by giving exaggerated stories to keep his audience happy in the entire speech. He also used other techniques of demonstrating and illustrating to deliver his information to the audience. He used point of view techniques in his speech. Shawn Anchor severally shared relevant stories in the middle of his speech to keep his audience alert and happy. This technique is used to take the attention of the audience and to avoid boredom. He also used the repetition technique of the word happiness to emphasize the meaning of happiness. He captivated his audience in the entire speech.

Angela Lee Duckworth is a very informative and calculated speaker. I noticed that she doesn’t speak about a topic unless it is backed up with information or she is well educated about it. When she speaks about how she left a job for even a more demanding job, teaching, she places her hook here. This hook is when she further speaks about the comparison of grades between her students. She mentions that even her top students, with high IQ scores were not doing so well in their classes. This will tie into her main idea about grit and her thesis of how having grit will help any student be successful. She breaks her points down by speaking about her personal life’s timeline and how she left graduate school to study psychology, so she can have a better grasp on what grit is and how it works. This was a very informative speech, when Duckworth was conducting studies on rookie teachers who were working in really tough neighborhoods and how many teachers would still be present at the end of the year, and how they improved learning for their children. This provided insight and information on how certain studies are conducted and will lead to valid and reliable findings and conclusions. Grit shapes our understanding of success because it shows us that with passion and perseverance we can accomplish anything, specifically academically, no matter what our IQ score may be.

Grit also shapes our understanding of the lack of success, by providing a reason why we are not doing well and are so weak in a certain subject in our lives. It is because there is a lack of that stamina, perseverance, and passion. Grit can be taught but more so through practice and how the more you practice to be grittier the more one can obtain that characteristic of being grittier. Duckworth mentions an idea by Stanford University of building grit, and that is growth mindset. This is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed but can be changed with your effort. Therefore grit is a trait that one cannot be born with but rather something that one develops. If I were giving an informative speech in class, what I would teach the class is about the importance of literature and proper language. My love for English and language in general has stemmed from since I was a child. It has developed this belief within me that without proper language and the use of words, one cannot successfully survive within the world. From an informative speech that someone else was presenting in the class, I would want to learn about cars and how they function. This will provide more of an understanding of the mechanisms of a car and the way they are engineered. This will provide a “why” reason to how certain situations occur with cars.

Shawn Anchor is a very entertaining speaker, I adored the way he began his speech by presenting a story with a childhood memory between him and his sister. When Anchor tells his sister that she is a unicorn, when she painfully lands on all fours, this makes her stand up from her pain and start playing once again. He introduces this as something called positive psychology, to me this leads into happiness and what true happiness is. Happiness has many forms that can stem from becoming something that is incredible, to obtaining or accomplishing a goal you’ve always wanted to, or having that creative outlook on life through a difficult time. Anchor's purpose of his speech is not letting reality shape us, but through the lens in which our brains use the world shapes your reality. If we can change the lens, you can change your happiness and every single educational and business outcome at the same time. His mention of the external world being predictive of our happiness is very hard hitting because everyone around you thinks you are happy and should be. Anchor also uses speech techniques such as humor, this captivates the audience and keeps the audience awake and listening. He also paints a picture through storytelling, this is a use of imagery that keeps the audience captivated. Picturing it shows that they are listening to his speech and focussing on how it may have taken place in real life.
