Part I: Next Week - Speeches Begin! "Print The Schedule"
It is posted as a page above!!
Speech 1 Begins on 9/16

What are we doing in class before the Speech?
We will have Speech Workshops!   Introductions /Brainstorming, Effective Visuals  & Body Language
THE FORMAL OUTLINE!!!!

I will answer any questions you may have next week before they begin!

________________________________________________________________________________

Part II: The Introductory Speech asks that you construct a 6-8 min  speech that explains some aspect of your life. This class asks that you focus on a "defining moment". Think about an experience/moment that has had an impact on your life. Your introductory Speech should share this aspect of who you are and this will tell a story to the audience.

Be sure to incorporate a visual and Hand in a Formal Outline! You will not be able to perform your speech without a formal outline!
Read Chapter 4 pgs. 63-75!

Introductory Speeches- Will begin on  WEDNESDAY  9/16
Your introductory speech should focus on a defining moment!
_______________________________________________________________________________

Part III : Watch: How To Start A Speech? Connor Niell
Make an impact from the beginning. 3 ways to start a speech... A question, A quote, a connection! Perhaps a Fact.... You want to engage the audience
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w82a1FT5o88

Take Notes in your notebook:
Answer the following: Does Niell make significant and worthy points?
What would you do? How would you tackle your speech?

Begin to Brainstorm Ideas for YOUR FIRST SPEECH!!!! Conduct some pre-writing in your notebook. Perhaps start with a circle in the middle that  reads "defining moment in my life" then write all of your ideas around it. This is called a cluster - free/writing. I used a T chart in my lecture. You can use a T chart or H chart if that helps.

Watch: Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) "DON'T WAIT"

Although it is a commencement speech it is still about his career. It is still meant to share the experience (moment) he had when he decided who he is and what he will become.
He talks about the defining moments that already happened and will happen again. However, the moment he made that decision to be an actor transformed him.

This is just brain food! You can take away what you feel from it.
Watching/ Reading Speeches is the best way to gain confidence and give speeches.

WATCH Mohammed Quatani - HE IS FANTASTIC!

Be sure to Review the Outline!!! You will need to hand in a complete outline and use only index cards (talking points) as you perform.

Be sure to Print our First Speech Schedule

Outline Q&A
Introductory Speech Q&A

PART II:  Read Chapter 1 pgs. 3-27 in The Art Of Public Speaking by Stephen Lucas

III. In your notebook 3 paragraphs:
Discuss the importance of public speaking. In your own words, describe how and why one would choose to employ the skills of public speaking? How can effectively speaking help a person in their lifetime? Can you think of any examples of someone you heard about, read about, or learned about?
Evaluate: How may one or more of the skills acquired through public speaking relate to your life? (This can be your present or future self)

Please use two concrete examples from the text to support your ideas. Concrete examples are clear examples that support your ideas and provide the reader with substance and credibility. When you incorporate ideas into your response you should always support it with evidence. In this case, you support your ideas with examples from the text (chapter 1).

For Example, preparation and logical ideas in business markets can help young generations in the job market "organizing one's thoughts in business can prove powerful results in a world with an abundance of technology in creative markets" (Lucas 22).
OR.... Lucas in his "Similarities between public Speaking and Conversation" asserts that spending the day talking with other people employs a wide variety of skills" (22).

IV: WATCH:  Josh Shipp's "One Caring Adult" https://youtu.be/u_Oapo1Q7_w
Actively Watch: As you watch it Take notes in YOUR NOTEBOOK: What makes this speech so powerful?
What is the main idea of this speech? Thesis? In what ways does he speak with powerful rhetoric?
Does he use Metaphors? anecdotes? Visuals? ... to captivate his audience?
How does he capture the audience and captivate the audience?
