DUE ON 9/21 - Discussion Board / Amy Cuddy

Review the Schedule - Brady made changes !

Have A Wonderful Weekend !

PART I:

DISCUSSION -

POST A 3 PARAGRAPH RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. POST Your responses in the comment box. TYPE IT IN WORD FIRST>. then copy paste it.. YOU NEVER WANT TO TYPE INTO THE BLOG BOX.. YOU MAY LOSE IT ! In addition, you should always be proofreading and editing your work for grammar spelling and sentence structure!!!

Just click on the title of this post and scroll down.. you will find the box for comments!

I ALSO ASK THAT YOU COMMENT ON A CLASS- MATE'S DISCUSSION PIECE: You can agree or disagree with something he or she said.. you can draw a connection.. you can simply add to their insight / analysis..  You can respond to a class - mate by  BY HITTING THE REPLY BUTTON after their comment.

THIS IS NOT A FORMAL WRITING PUBLISHED PIECE..   HOWEVER, THIS IS AN ASSIGNMENT AND A SCHOLARLY DISCUSSION..A DISCUSSION  COUNTS AS PARTICIPATION.. PARTICIPATION IS WORTH 15 PERCENT OF YOUR GRADE.. MAKE IT HAPPEN!

TASK :
Actively Watch "Body Language" by Amy Cuddy
This means take MANY NOTES in your notebook as you watch/listen to her talk! Think about the evaluation questions and prepare to respond in Published Writing Format!

Evaluate:  How would you evaluate Cuddy as a speaker?
Examine at least three skills (skills you learned in this class)  she implements in her presentation. Discuss how these particular skills enhance her speech.

Choose ONE main argument Cuddy makes in her speech.  "Body Language"  and discuss it. Why is it so important? Explain it's significance ? How does it govern how we think and feel about others? how do they govern how we feel about ourselves?

Analysis: What have you learned from examining this speech? Power, Possibility, Confidence? Body Mind Connection?

Compare a main point (separate from the one you made before)  Cuddy makes about social interactions and judgments to that of a real life example.  In this case I would like you to evaluate non verbals in the world. Provide an example from Cuddy and then connect it to an example from the outside world! For Example;  something you learned about , read about or previously experienced.

*Pay attention to...

  •  Grammar and spelling
  • Sentence structure
  • Create clear paragraphs
  • Language (vocabulary)
  • Impress your readers!

Everything counts in LIFE and in the Real World
" People who read well, write well and speak well.. Do Well "

Part I: Next Week - Speeches Begin! "Print The Schedule"
It is posted as a page above!!
Speech 1 Begins on 9/16

What are we doing in class before the Speech?
We will have Speech Workshops!   Introductions /Brainstorming, Effective Visuals  & Body Language
THE FORMAL OUTLINE!!!!

I will answer any questions you may have next week before they begin!

________________________________________________________________________________

Part II: The Introductory Speech asks that you construct a 6-8 min  speech that explains some aspect of your life. This class asks that you focus on a "defining moment". Think about an experience/moment that has had an impact on your life. Your introductory Speech should share this aspect of who you are and this will tell a story to the audience.

Be sure to incorporate a visual and Hand in a Formal Outline! You will not be able to perform your speech without a formal outline!
Read Chapter 4 pgs. 63-75!

Introductory Speeches- Will begin on  WEDNESDAY  9/16
Your introductory speech should focus on a defining moment!
_______________________________________________________________________________

Part III : Watch: How To Start A Speech? Connor Niell
Make an impact from the beginning. 3 ways to start a speech... A question, A quote, a connection! Perhaps a Fact.... You want to engage the audience
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w82a1FT5o88

Take Notes in your notebook:
Answer the following: Does Niell make significant and worthy points?
What would you do? How would you tackle your speech?

Begin to Brainstorm Ideas for YOUR FIRST SPEECH!!!! Conduct some pre-writing in your notebook. Perhaps start with a circle in the middle that  reads "defining moment in my life" then write all of your ideas around it. This is called a cluster - free/writing. I used a T chart in my lecture. You can use a T chart or H chart if that helps.

Watch: Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) "DON'T WAIT"

Although it is a commencement speech it is still about his career. It is still meant to share the experience (moment) he had when he decided who he is and what he will become.
He talks about the defining moments that already happened and will happen again. However, the moment he made that decision to be an actor transformed him.

This is just brain food! You can take away what you feel from it.
Watching/ Reading Speeches is the best way to gain confidence and give speeches.

WATCH Mohammed Quatani - HE IS FANTASTIC!

Be sure to Review the Outline!!! You will need to hand in a complete outline and use only index cards (talking points) as you perform.

Be sure to Print our First Speech Schedule

Next Class !
Now that we went over HOOKS, INTROS, Visuals and OUTLINING... come to class with questions
Outline Q&A
Introductory Speech Q&A

FIRST!! Let me say thank you for your patience. It does take time to create a positive and authentic learning environment while learning new platforms and WE ROCKED IT TODAY!!! I thought it went well!

We will wrap up the groups first thing on 9/9

I will post Mondays  lecture on the blog ( as a page ) just in case .. I will also post it on Black Board under WEEK 2.

_________________________________________________________________________________

DUE ON 9/9

PART I:  * PLEASE PRINT & STUDY THE FORMAL OUTLINE FOR SPEECHES . BRING IT WITH YOU TO CLASS Next CLASS!

I WILL GO OVER IT IN CLASS.
It is posted as a page above... here it is again.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZBgx3yEJxqKTfPOfwB3AwoTLqWf9wKVAxgvuKrtYuSc/edit

PART II:  Read Chapter 1 pgs. 3-27 in The Art Of Public Speaking by Stephen Lucas

III. In your notebook 3 paragraphs:
Discuss the importance of public speaking. In your own words, describe how and why one would choose to employ the skills of public speaking? How can effectively speaking help a person in their lifetime? Can you think of any examples of someone you heard about, read about, or learned about?
Evaluate: How may one or more of the skills acquired through public speaking relate to your life? (This can be your present or future self)

Please use two concrete examples from the text to support your ideas. Concrete examples are clear examples that support your ideas and provide the reader with substance and credibility. When you incorporate ideas into your response you should always support it with evidence. In this case, you support your ideas with examples from the text (chapter 1).

For Example, preparation and logical ideas in business markets can help young generations in the job market "organizing one's thoughts in business can prove powerful results in a world with an abundance of technology in creative markets" (Lucas 22).
OR.... Lucas in his "Similarities between public Speaking and Conversation" asserts that spending the day talking with other people employs a wide variety of skills" (22).

IV: WATCH:  Josh Shipp's "One Caring Adult" https://youtu.be/u_Oapo1Q7_w
Actively Watch: As you watch it Take notes in YOUR NOTEBOOK: What makes this speech so powerful?
What is the main idea of this speech? Thesis? In what ways does he speak with powerful rhetoric?
Does he use Metaphors? anecdotes? Visuals? ... to captivate his audience?
How does he capture the audience and captivate the audience?

Another Version
